Observatory, known as Obs, sits on the lower northern slopes of Devil's Peak beside the Liesbeek River, on land that was once a marshy estuary.1 It takes its name from the Royal Observatory, set up in 1820 as the first scientific institution in Africa and now the headquarters of the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO), whose main telescopes stand near Sutherland, about 370 km away.2
It is a student neighborhood, close to the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital, and under apartheid it was one of the few "grey" suburbs where people of different races lived together.1 The suburb traces its origins to a 1657 land grant by the Dutch East India Company.1 Cafés, bars and shops line Lower Main Road, and Station Road and Main Road have a few more.
Local tip: On an SAAO open night, eat first on Lower Main Road: Black Duke serves until 20:00, when the talk begins on Observatory Road.

The observatory, the hospital and the mill
The SAAO opens its Observatory Road campus on the second and fourth Saturday of every month, 20:00–22:00, with entry from 19:30.4 Evenings start with a talk, continue with the library, the museum and the 120-year-old McClean telescope, and end with stargazing if the sky allows; children aged six and under go free.4
Groote Schuur Hospital, nearby, is where Christiaan Barnard performed the world's first heart transplant in 1967.1 In Mowbray, first called Driekoppen, Dutch for "three heads", Mostert's Mill of 1796 is the only complete windmill in South Africa; a fire destroyed it in April 2021, and it was fully restored three years later.5
Trains, buses and the Liesbeek
Observatory and Mowbray are the third and fourth stations on the Southern Line out of Cape Town, after Woodstock and Salt River, and trains do not normally run on Sundays or public holidays.6 Mowbray station doubles as an interchange, with a large Golden Arrow bus station and a minibus taxi rank beside it.5
Main Road, the M4, runs north to south through Mowbray, and the Liesbeek River flows north through the suburb, dividing it in two.5
