Frühstück (breakfast) in Berlin runs long. Top10 Berlin calls it almost a cult, especially at weekends, and notes that cafés in Neukölln, Prenzlauer Berg and Kreuzberg often serve eggs Benedict or shakshuka well into the afternoon; on Saturdays and Sundays a reservation is often a good idea.1

The other morning tradition is Turkish. Kahvaltı, the Turkish breakfast, takes its name from kahve (coffee) and altı (before), because coffee traditionally came after the meal; the spread runs from cheeses, olives, eggs and börek to simit, menemen and kaymak, with black tea (çay).2 Prenzlauer Berg and Kreuzberg have the most breakfast and brunch cafés, followed by Neukölln.

Local tip: Book ahead for a Saturday or Sunday brunch in Prenzlauer Berg or Kreuzberg, or go on a weekday, when Lorch & Söhne and The Breakfast Story already serve from 08:00.1
