Specialty coffee in Berlin goes back more than two decades. The café at Boxhagener Straße 74 in Friedrichshain opened in 2002 as Tres Cabezas and now trades as 19grams, which Top10 Berlin counts among the pioneers of specialty coffee in Germany.1 The Barn, a roaster founded by Ralf Rüller in the Scheunenviertel in 2010, buys only coffees that score at least 86 points on the SCA scale.2
In 2026 the Roasters app showed 261 specialty cafés and roasters in Berlin, 23 percent of its German entries and well ahead of Hamburg's 102; it ranks Berlin sixth among European cities.3 Finding them takes some attention: Sprudge noted in 2020 that the best Berlin cafés often sit behind nondescript signage and that cash is king.4
Local tip: Several specialty bars open late at weekends: Bonanza Coffee Heroes on Oderberger Straße, 19grams Schlesi on Schlesische Straße and the Bonanza on Jägerstraße all start at 10:00 on Saturdays and Sundays, so save the 08:00 openings for weekdays.
Where these cafés are: Kreuzberg (13), Neukölln (7), Friedrichshain (6), Prenzlauer Berg (6), Wedding & Gesundbrunnen (5), Mitte (4), Charlottenburg (4), Friedenau (2), Wilmersdorf (2), Pankow (1), Treptow, Weißensee & the east (1), Westend (1), Britz (1).

Kreuzberg has the most specialty cafés, about twice as many as Neukölln, Friedrichshain or Prenzlauer Berg. In Friedrichshain two share one street, 19grams at Boxhagener Straße 74 and Cebe Coffee Roasters at 82, both with tables outside. Nearby, Blaue Bohnen Kaffeerösterei at Seumestraße 14 is open daily 08:00–18:00, and Catnip Coffee at Warschauer Straße 69 pours until 22:00 from Monday to Saturday.

Many of these cafés roast their own beans. Five Elephant opened in 2010 and is run by Sophie and Kris Schackmann; the coffee is roasted on Glogauer Straße and served next door at Reichenberger Straße 101.5 Bonanza, founded in 2006 by Yumi Choi and Kiduk Reus, roasts and serves in the same room at Oderberger Straße 35.6
19grams opened its roastery café near Alexanderplatz in summer 2018, where you can watch the roasting.4 The beans are roasted there every week and delivered to the other branches, including the original café on Boxhagener Straße.1 In Neukölln, Ketori Coffee at Weserstraße 202 began as a daytime pop-up inside Bar Kuschlowski, using its own roasted beans for espresso and brewing kombucha.4
In August 2026, The Barn charged about €3.50 for a filter coffee and €4 for a flat white.2 Beans to take home vary more. As of August 2026, a 250 g bag of Five Elephant's house espresso or filter started at €11.68, 19grams' filter coffees at €12.90 and Bonanza's Gogogu Ethiopia at €17.90.516

Fjord Coffee Roasters handed out small porcelain espresso cups to visitors, and Nicole Battefeld of Röststätte competed in the World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship.7 Röststätte's café at Ackerstraße 173 opens at 08:00 on weekdays.
