Ho Chi Minh City still goes by Saigon in everyday speech, and since 2025 Sài Gòn has also been the official name of the downtown ward around Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office and Nguyễn Huệ.12 The city grew the same year, taking in Bình Dương and Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu provinces, and now counts more than 14 million people.1

Coffee here runs from the pavement up. Beside the cathedral, 30/4 Park has long been the place for cà phê bệt, "floor coffee", where vendors with no tables or chairs hand you a newspaper to sit on.5 On the Nguyễn Huệ walking street, the nine-storey apartment block at number 42 is now mostly cafés and shops, reached by the stairs or a slow, paid lift.6

Prices stretch further than in most cities. Znews reported in October 2026 that one specialty café in the city had sold a single cup for 500,000₫, and that most drinks at Bosgaurus Coffee Roasters cost 75,000–95,000₫.7 At the other end, a black cloth-filtered coffee at an old alley café cost 12,000–16,000₫ in August 2026.12

How coffee works in Ho Chi Minh City

Southern names apply. Milk coffee is cà phê sữa đá, iced with condensed milk, and black is cà phê đen đá, sweetened with sugar as a rule.8 Bạc xỉu, mostly milk with a little coffee, is a staple of the coffee chains, which charged 35,000–49,000₫ for it in August 2026.12

The city's older brew is cà phê vợt. In the Hoa (ethnic Chinese) coffee shops of Chợ Lớn, ground coffee was steeped in boiling water, strained through a net lined with cloth, and held warm in a clay pot, a siêu đất, over a dying fire.9 Only a few places still make it that way.9

Cafés are built for sitting, often on low plastic stools on the sidewalk, and most coffees come with a free glass of iced jasmine or green tea, and refills are usually free too.8 Nobody expects a tip at a traditional café, though rounding up is appreciated at Western-style specialty bars.8 Many stalls take bank transfers from a printed VietQR code, and VietQR payments rose 85% in value in the first ten months of 2025.10

Foreign phones are another matter. In September 2026 only about 6% of Vietnam's 2.5 million-plus payment points accepted VietQR Global, and the cross-border links of NAPAS, the national payment network, covered six countries: China, Thailand, South Korea, Singapore, Cambodia and Laos.11 Carry small notes. The rainy season usually runs from May to November and the dry season from December to April; when tide, rain and river flow coincide, parts of the city flood.1

Which district of Ho Chi Minh City has the most cafés?

What is cà phê vợt in Ho Chi Minh City?

Cà phê vợt is Saigon's cloth-filtered coffee. Ground coffee is steeped in boiling water, strained through a net lined with cloth and kept warm in a clay pot, a method from the Hoa coffee shops of Chợ Lớn. Only a few places still make it; in August 2026 a black cup at an old alley café cost 12,000–16,000₫.

Do you tip at cafés in Ho Chi Minh City?

No tip is expected at a traditional café in Ho Chi Minh City, where a free glass of iced tea usually comes with your coffee. At Western-style specialty bars, rounding up is appreciated but not required. Many stalls take bank transfers by VietQR code, but in 2026 the cross-border version worked at only about 6% of payment points, so carry small notes.

How do the 2025 ward changes affect café addresses in Ho Chi Minh City?

On 1 July 2025 Ho Chi Minh City replaced its districts with 168 wards, communes and special zones, 102 of them inside the old city. Old District 1, for example, became the Sài Gòn, Bến Thành, Tân Định and Cầu Ông Lãnh wards. Hotels, guides and locals still use the old district names, so addresses often mix old and new.
