Zuoying (左營區) began in the mid-17th century as a military fortress called Old Fengshan, on the site of what is now Tsoying Harbour.1 The district covers 19.39 km² and had 197,026 residents in October 2023.1 Its main sights are around Lotus Pond, an artificial lake lined with temples and pagodas, and the gates of the old stone city wall.12

Zuoying station is the southern terminus of Taiwan High Speed Rail.1 Cafés gather on Bo'ai 2nd Road (博愛二路) around the arena and along Mingcheng 2nd Road, and the district has more coffee roasters than any other part of the city.

Local tip: Arriving late by high-speed rail? Wu Pao Chun's arena shop at Bo'ai 2nd Road 777 stays open until 22:00, or 22:30 on Fridays and Saturdays.4

Lotus Pond and the Old City of Fengshan

The Spring and Autumn Pavilions on Lotus Pond (蓮池潭), two four-story octagonal towers, belong to a temple complex founded in 1953; the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas were built after a 1974 order attributed to the deity Baosheng Dadi.2 The Confucius Temple, first built in 1684, was rebuilt on the north shore in 1977 and is the largest in Taiwan.21

The stone walls of the Old City of Fengshan were finished in 1826. The East Gate (Fongyi Gate) is the best preserved, the North and South gates also survive, the South Gate now in a traffic circle, and all three were rated first-class historic sites in 1985.3

Zuoying station and the arena

The high-speed rail station is a joint station with Xinzuoying on Taiwan Railway and Zuoying on the MRT Red Line.1 Wu Pao Chun Bakery (吳寶春) has a shop on the second floor of the HSR station, open 09:00–21:00.4

Kaohsiung Arena, which locals call the Big Egg, opened on 27 September 2008, holds 15,000 people and is a short walk north of Kaohsiung Arena station.5 At Bo'ai 2nd Road 777, the address of the Hanshin Arena (漢神巨蛋) mall, you'll find Café del SOL, Hi-Lai Café and 等一個人咖啡, and Wu Pao Chun's arena branch in the basement serves until 22:00, or 22:30 on Fridays and Saturdays.4

Mingcheng Road, from the river to the museum

Mingcheng Road (明誠路) runs 4,746 m from Jinding Road in the east to Makadao Road in the west, in four sections linking Niaosong, Sanmin, Zuoying and Gushan.6 The second section passes the Dale shopping center and a riverbank park and crosses the Love River on Mingcheng Bridge; the third passes Aozihdi Forest Park, and the fourth reaches the Museum of Fine Arts.6

On Mingcheng 2nd Road, 加&b咖啡外帶吧, a takeaway coffee bar, and 芝咖啡 share No. 265, and CheeN 燈塔咖啡創意料理 is at No. 520. Aozihdi Park (凹子底公園) hosted the 2024 Kaohsiung City Coffee Festival in November, with more than 60 coffee, dessert and food-truck vendors.7

Roasters on Fumin Road

On Fumin Road (富民路), Dotz Coffee Roasters is in Lane 13 and 跨咖啡, a roastery that doubles as a barbershop, at No. 456. Sunnyday Cafe Roaster is at Zhongyan Road 115.

For bread, Pipipie Bakery is on Wenzi Road and 福中居 at Minglun Road 53. 多一點 咖啡館 at Wenzi Road 286 opens daily 09:00–17:00, and 黑浮咖啡 at Wenzhong Road 8 has Wi-Fi, step-free access in part and no smoking.
