How Muyenga was built
Before independence in 1962, and through the 1960s and 1970s, Muyenga was an upscale residential area. After the Obote II government fell in 1986, building came fast and unplanned: the houses are good, but the roads and drainage are chaotic.1 Many owners are from government and business.1
Kampala International University and the British School of Kampala are on or near the hill,, and the Diplomate Hotel is among the landmarks on the hill.1
Kabalagala and Ggaba Road
Kabalagala, about 6 km southeast of the center, takes its name from a Luganda pancake of sweet bananas and cassava flour spiced with local peppers: street vendors called it out to motorists waiting at the junction, and the name stuck. The area used to be called Kisugu.2
It is the neighborhood's entertainment strip, with restaurants, bars and nightclubs, many open around the clock, and in the 2000s banks, supermarkets and fuel stations arrived.2 Its center is the junction of Ggaba Road, Nsambya Road and Muyenga Road, and the US Embassy is about 1 km west along Ggaba Road in Nsambya.2 Bean Café is on Ggaba Road at number 944.
Kansanga, about 7 km from the center by road, was mostly middle-class housing in the 1950s and 1960s and turned upscale in the 1990s, when Kampala International University and the International University of East Africa set up their main campuses there.5 Ggaba Road continues south to Ggaba, on Lake Victoria about 11 km from the center, where fishing boats land beside a fish market.6
