The Docklands take in both banks of the Liffey east of the city centre: the IFSC and Spencer Dock on the north side, Sir John Rogerson's Quay and Grand Canal Dock on the south. Grand Canal Dock opened in 1796 to a design by William Jessop and, at the time, formed the largest docks in the world.1 Tech firms followed Google, which opened its Dublin headquarters in 2002, and by 2011 the area had picked up the nickname Silicon Docks; technology firms employed about 7,000 people here by 2015.1
Coffee here follows the working day. Many counters open at 07:00 or 07:30 for office staff and close by mid-afternoon, and weekends are quieter. The Docklands also have the most specialty roasters of any area in Dublin, from 3fe's flagship on Grand Canal Street to Cool Hand on Hanover Quay.2
Local tip: Many dock counters close at 15:00 or 15:30, Cafe Sora and As One among them, so plan an afternoon coffee for Surge or Cool Hand on Hanover Quay, both open until 17:00.
