Smithfield's square was laid out as a market in the mid-17th century, close to the old Oxmantown Green. Its restoration under a 1997 design meant lifting more than 400,000 cobblestones, cleaning them by hand and relaying them.1 Just north, Stoneybatter takes its name from the Irish Bóthar na gCloch, and Time Out put it on its 2019 list of the world's coolest neighbourhoods.2

Cafés sit on and around the square, along Manor Street and Prussia Street in Stoneybatter, and on Parkgate Street toward the Phoenix Park. The park was a royal hunting ground in the 1660s, opened to the public in 1747 and still has a herd of wild fallow deer.3

Local tip: Come on a weekday morning: Proper Order and Third Space both open at 07:00, while the Phoenix Park Tea Rooms wait until 09:30.

Smithfield Square

The square still holds a horse fair, now twice a year on the first Sunday of March and of September; a bye-law passed in January 2013 cut it back from monthly. Twelve 26.5 m lighting masts, each topped by a gas flame, line the square, though the flames are rarely lit, and the Old Jameson Distillery is one of the area's landmarks.1

Third Space, in Smithfield Market, has run since 2012 as a business with a social purpose: it trades without subsidies, and community groups use the room outside business hours.4 It opens at 07:00 on weekdays. Oxmantown's Smithfield café opens 07:30–15:00 on weekdays and 08:30–15:00 at weekends.5

Proper Order and No Messin'

Proper Order on Haymarket pulls shots on a three-group La Marzocco with four Victoria Arduino grinders, using beans from roasters such as Dak, Square Mile and Coffee Collective.6 It opens at 07:00 on weekdays and 10:00 on Saturdays.

Its bakery sibling, No Messin', opened in 2020 just off Smithfield Square in Stoneybatter and is best known for buttery mince pies; it has plenty of indoor seating.7

Stoneybatter

Many of Stoneybatter's streets carry Viking names, among them Olaf Road, Sitric Road and Ivar Street, and Manor Street, named in 1780, recalls the Manor of Grangegorman.2

The Little Cactus at 1a Prussia Street has a green La Marzocco among the plants and a hidden greenhouse-style room at the back, with murals.6 Its flat white cost €4.30 in May 2026, and Slice on Manor Place charged €3.90.8 Social Fabric Cafe at 34 Stoneybatter opens every day, and Cinnamon Cafe on Coke Lane starts at 06:45 on weekdays. Urbanity, on the same lane, opens at 08:00 on weekdays and 09:00 at weekends, and The Dock on May Lane closes early, at 14:00, on Fridays.

Toward the Phoenix Park

Parkgate Street runs west toward the Phoenix Park, whose 11 km wall encloses 707 hectares.9 Provender & Family at 27a Parkgate Street opens at 08:00 on weekdays.

Inside the park, the Phoenix Park Tea Rooms stand next to Dublin Zoo, and the Phoenix Park Café sits by the Victorian walled garden, which grows some of what it serves.10 The Tea Rooms open daily from 09:30 to 16:30.
