Armenian Street takes its name from the Armenian traders who lived along it by 1808, though they did not stay long; by the mid-19th century Chinese clans had taken over most of the street, and clan houses such as the Khoo Kongsi were built nearby.1 Sun Yat-sen chaired his 1910 Penang conference in a townhouse here, now the Sun Yat-sen Museum, and Ernest Zacharevic's mural Children on a Bicycle is on the same street.1
Beach Street, Lebuh Pantai in Malay, ran along the shoreline until Weld Quay was built.2 Its northern end became the banking street, and the banks around it made George Town the financial center of northern Malaysia.3 For cafés it is the busiest street in the city, with Lebuh Carnarvon, Victoria Street and Pengkalan Weld behind it.
Local tip: Ome by Spacebar was closed Wednesday to Friday in February 2026, so save Lorong Toh Aka for a Saturday to Tuesday morning; it opens at 07:30.8
