Newtown grew after trams arrived in 1879. Charles Moody had already built the Newtown Hotel on the corner of Constable and Riddiford streets in 1876, hoping a town would grow around it.1 It became a largely working-class suburb and is now one of the city's most mixed: in 2023, 37.2% of residents were born overseas, against 28.8% nationally, and the median age was 31.8.1

Riddiford Street is the spine, running from Mount Cook through Newtown to Berhampore, with Wellington Hospital on it.1 Frank's Coffee is at number 5, at the Mount Cook end, and most of the other cafés gather between 120 and 188, from pránáh to Patisserie Delight.

Local tip: Come on a weekday or Saturday: on Sundays several Riddiford Street cafés close, though Newday Newtown on Constable Street and Mingle on Adelaide Road stay open.
