Local tip: For Wi-Fi after 17:00, Amuse Snack Bar on Willis Street opens until 20:00 from Wednesday to Friday, and Mingle on Adelaide Road until 21:00 on Fridays.

Lambton Quay and the CBD

Belén Plant Bakery at 104 Lambton Quay has Wi-Fi, indoor tables and outdoor seats, open 07:30–15:00 on weekdays. Cuckoo at 57 Customhouse Quay, Spin at 15 Stout Street and the annexe on Lambton Quay also have Wi-Fi.

Like most CBD cafés, Belén closes at weekends, when the office district goes quiet. On a Saturday or Sunday, Cafe Neo and Amuse Snack Bar on Willis Street both open. In the CBD, Spin at 15 Stout Street and Cuckoo at 57 Customhouse Quay have Wi-Fi as well.

Willis Street, Te Aro and the waterfront

Cafe Neo at 132 Willis Street opens every day, 07:30–15:00 on weekdays and from 08:00 at weekends, in a room with American oak tables and large windows.4 Amuse Snack Bar at 178 Willis Street is the late choice, open until 20:00 from Wednesday to Friday.

Creamy and Crunchy at 50 Webb Street, a bakery with vegan choices, opens at 06:00 on weekdays but closes at 14:00. On the waterfront, Karaka Cafe at 2 Taranaki Street has Wi-Fi and outdoor tables.

Kelburn and Newtown

In Kelburn, Rātā at 53 Waiapu Road opens seven days from 09:00, until 16:30 on weekdays and 17:00 at weekends. Aro Valley, below, is a student suburb: in 2023 almost half its residents were aged 15 to 29.5

In Newtown, Mingle Cafe & Eatery at 469 Adelaide Road has Wi-Fi and outdoor tables, opens every day and stays open until 21:00 on Fridays.

Moving between Wi-Fi cafés

The central city is only about two kilometers across, a 30-minute walk from side to side, so a morning on Lambton Quay and an afternoon on Willis Street need no transport.6 For Kelburn, the cable car leaves Cable Car Lane every 10 minutes and takes three to five minutes to the top.7

Weekend hours differ from weekday ones. Amuse Snack Bar on Willis Street serves until 20:00 from Wednesday to Friday but only to 16:00 on Saturdays and closes on Mondays, and Creamy and Crunchy opens until 12:00 on Saturdays and stays shut on Sundays.

Rain, hours and the central library

June and July are Wellington's wettest months, so winter is when an indoor table counts.8 Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui, the rebuilt central library at 65 Victoria Street, reopened on 14 March 2026; the old building had closed at short notice in March 2019 over its earthquake risk.9
