An Cựu is named after the river that runs through the south of the city. The Nguyễn court gave the whole waterway the official name Lợi Nông and had it dredged from the early 19th century for irrigation and small boats, yet residents still call its stretches by about a dozen local names.1 In July 2025 the wards of An Cựu, An Đông and An Tây merged into one An Cựu ward, while Trường An and Phước Vĩnh became part of Thuận Hóa.2

Its cafés are strung along long through streets rather than packed into one block. More of them serve until 22:00 or later than in any other part of Huế, and most open by 07:00.

Ngự Bình and the Nam Giao altar

Ngự Bình is an earth hill 103 m high, about 4 km south of the center on the right bank of the Perfume River.3 Gia Long gave it its current name, and it served as the screen (án) in front of the capital, a role the Nguyễn lords had already given it when they moved their seat to Phú Xuân in 1687.3 Thanh Cafe at 97 Ngự Bình opens at 06:00.

Đàn Nam Giao, south of the Citadel, is the altar where Nguyễn emperors worshipped Heaven; Gia Long had it built in 1806, and 98 great ceremonies took place there between 1807 and 1945.4 Restoration of its remaining parts began in November 2024 and was due for handover in the last quarter of 2026.4

Phan Chu Trinh and Phan Bội Châu

Phan Chu Trinh carries the longest run of cafés in this part of town: An Garden - Coffee & Bakery at 98, open 06:30–22:00; MooD kafe at 170, from 06:00; Cafe Nhiên at 188, with Wi-Fi; and Chốt Cafe at 338.

Phan Bội Châu has Bonjour Cafe at 59, Lagim BBQ & COFFEE at 272, which serves from 06:30 to 22:30, and Thành cafe at 328. Deja Vu Coffee at 6B Sư Liễu Quán and BA.LO at 231 Trần Phú both keep 07:00–22:00, and Nghĩa Cafe at 19 Nguyễn Trường Tộ adds Wi-Fi to the same hours.

Điện Biên Phủ and the side streets

On Điện Biên Phủ, Ca Phe Che Nong “5km/h” at number 30 pairs coffee with sesame desserts and has vegan options, and Tiệm cafe Nàng Thơ is at 220. Trốn Café at 22A runs from 06:00 to 03:00, the latest closing time in Huế for a café that isn't open around the clock.

Đặng Huy Trứ has two 06:00 openers with Wi-Fi, 43 House Coffee at 43 and Nâu Coffee Shop at 103, and Cafe cư xá at 15 Lương Văn Can keeps the same 06:00–22:00 hours. CB plus cafe & milktea at 50 Hồ Đắc Di stays open until 22:30, and Cafe TÀU is down the alley at 12/6 Hồ Đắc Di.

Cool months and late starts

From November to March Huế has a cool season, with January the coldest month at an average of 20°C, the time for a hot cà phê at a street table.5 Daytime highs average 34.7°C in June and July, so in summer the outdoor seats are best before 09:00.5

Not every café here opens early. sweetie lemon café at 18 Võ Liêm Sơn starts at 08:00 and closes at 21:00, NGÂM cà phê at 14 Hàm Nghi opens at 07:00 and serves until 22:30, and T.U.I Cafe at 9 Chế Lan Viên keeps 06:30–22:00 with Wi-Fi.
