Fitzroy was subdivided and sold on 13 February 1839, which makes it Melbourne's first suburb; at about 1.4 km² it is also the city's smallest and most densely populated area outside the CBD.1 Collingwood, across Smith Street, was industrial, and Foy & Gibson's former factories and warehouses still dominate Oxford and Cambridge Streets.2 Both begin about 3 km north-east of the CBD.12

About half of the two suburbs' cafés are on Brunswick, Gertrude, Smith and Johnston Streets. Roasters are the draw. In February 2025 Proud Mary, at 172 Oxford Street in Collingwood, came fourth in the first edition of The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops.3

Local tip: Proud Mary on Oxford Street and Industry Beans on Westgarth Street both open at 08:00 at weekends and close by 15:30, so go in the morning.
