Sopocachi grew up in the mid-19th century and has been the cultural, artistic and bohemian quarter of La Paz ever since; the national fine-arts academy, founded in 1926, and the music conservatory, founded in 1907, are both here.1 The city recognizes four heritage ensembles of houses in Sopocachi, more than in any other zone.1 On weekends its bars, clubs and theaters make it the busiest part of the city.1
Cafés line Avenida 20 de Octubre, Avenida Ecuador and Avenida 6 de Agosto, with more on the side streets and pasajes (lanes). Several stay open past 22:00: Blueberries Café on 20 de Octubre opens 08:00–23:30 every day, and Café Ciudad stays open until 23:00 on Wednesday.
Local tip: Check Sangre y Madera’s cultural agenda before going: on show nights the house fills for flamenco, tango or live music, and tables are booked by WhatsApp.4

Plaza Abaroa and Avenida 20 de Octubre
Plaza Abaroa lies between Avenida 20 de Octubre, Calle Sánchez Lima, Pedro Salazar and Belisario Salinas, and honors Eduardo Abaroa, who defended Calama in the War of the Pacific. Every 23 March the president leads the Día del Mar here, marking the loss of Bolivia’s coast.2
Wayruru Cafe, on Avenida Sánchez Lima, has outdoor tables and vegan dishes. At 20 de Octubre 2060, La Virgen de los Deseos is the La Paz house of Mujeres Creando, the feminist movement founded in 1992, which serves food and offers lodging there.5
Sangre y Madera, off Pasaje Medinacelli
Café Espacio Cultural Sangre y Madera occupies a 1920s republican-style house off the Medinacelli lane, once owned by the diplomat and minister Hugo Ernst.3 The civil engineer and barista Víctor Hugo Belmonte and the chef Kruzcaya Calancha opened it on 7 July 2017.4 Belmonte learned his methods on a course in Barcelona taught by the Belgian barista Kim Ossenblok.3
The house still stages flamenco by its own dance troupe, along with tango classes and live music.4 The coffee comes from the Yungas and is brewed by V60, Chemex, Kalita, AeroPress, siphon or French press.36 It opens 12:00–22:00 daily.
Avenida Ecuador and the Montículo
Avenida Ecuador has a run of small cafés: Condor Huayna at 2448, Café Arte Sultana at 2496, open 11:00–22:00 Monday to Saturday, Jarr Cafe at 2545 and Retrato Cafe at 2612. Café Munaipata is on the same avenue.
The Montículo, a hilltop park, is entered through a stone gateway carved in 1770 and looks across the city to Illimani; it was declared a historic, cultural and landscape heritage site in 2014.1 Its chapel of the Immaculate Conception celebrates its feast every 8 December.1
Avenida 6 de Agosto and the side streets
Biofilia, at Avenida 6 de Agosto and Belisario Salinas, calls itself a specialty café and cooks organic vegetarian and vegan food; it opens 08:00–21:00 Monday to Saturday.7 Kuchen Stube is at Calle Rosendo Gutiérrez 461, a street that shares its name with one of the heritage ensembles.1
Pastelería Coconut, at Calle Miguel de Cervantes 2725, opens 08:30–20:00 Monday to Saturday; Rockport Coffee is at Calle Pascoe 2635 and Organic Mountain Cafe at Vincenti 661. Alexander Coffee’s branch on 20 de Octubre opens 07:30–23:30 on weekdays.
