Quito sits at about 2,850 m in the Andes, and its colonial center was one of the first two places UNESCO inscribed as World Cultural Heritage, in 1978, together with Kraków.1 Its coffee runs from that old center, where Cafetería Modelo has worked the corner of Sucre and García Moreno since 1950, to the light-roast bars of the north.23 Everything is priced in US dollars, legal tender in Ecuador since 13 March 2000, when they replaced the sucre at 25,000 to the dollar.4
Most of what is in the cup is grown at home. Ecuador is one of only 15 countries that grow and export both arabica and robusta, and washed arabica comes from El Oro, Manabí, Loja, Guayas and Zamora Chinchipe.5 Loja leads on quality: its coffee has won 71% of the editions of Taza Dorada, the national coffee contest, and in October 2026 the National Assembly named it the Capital del Café del Ecuador (Ecuador's coffee capital).67
The continent's coffee scene now meets here as well. South America's 100 Best Coffee Shops 2026 was revealed on 20 September 2026 at the Global Coffee Fair in Quito's Centro de Convenciones Metropolitano, and three more cafés from the Quito area made the list: Café Guayasamín, Benchtime and Raymi.8 Fankør, a Quito roaster-café, came second, up from fourth in 2025, after entering the world list at 11th in February 2026.9

How coffee works in Quito
The usual order is an americano. On PedidosYa, the delivery app, americanos made up about 40% of café drink orders in 2026, with cappuccinos and lattes together just over 20% and frappés about 15%.10 At home, instant still rules: soluble coffee was more than half of the app's coffee-category orders.10 Anecafé, the coffee exporters' association, puts Ecuador's consumption at about 300,000 sacks a year, around a kilo per person.7
Coffee rarely comes alone. Pan de yuca, a warm, puffy roll made with cassava flour, is often eaten with drinkable yogurt.11 The quimbolito, a sweet cake steamed in achira leaves, is usually served with coffee, chocolate or milk.12 In the Old Town, Casa Gangotena, the hotel on Plaza San Francisco, serves the Café Quiteño, its local version of afternoon tea, on an interior terrace.3
Prepared food and drink in restaurants and cafés carries IVA (value-added tax) of 15%, raised from 12% on 1 April 2024.13 Notes are US dollars, but change can include Ecuadorian centavo coins, which match US coins in size and value and circulate alongside them.14

How much does a coffee cost in Quito?
In May 2024 an americano cost US$1.50 at Cafetería Modelo in the Centro Histórico and US$2–2.75 at other Old Town cafés, while the hotel café at Casa Gangotena on Plaza San Francisco charged US$4.
