La Mariscal is the everyday name of Mariscal Sucre, the urban parish between Avenida Patria and Avenida Francisco de Orellana, with 10 de Agosto on its west side and 12 de Octubre on its east.1 The sector was named after Antonio José de Sucre in the 1910s, when it was a district of mansions, and the tram brought its first shops in the early 1920s.1
From the early 1970s families moved further north, and the parish became Quito's quarter for hotels, hostels, bars and craft shops.12 Plaza Foch, also called Plaza El Quinde, is the center of La Zona, the nightlife blocks.12 Cafés here keep later hours than in most of the city, and La Unión, a bakery on Reina Victoria, opens at 06:00.
Local tip: For coffee before 07:00, La Unión on Reina Victoria opens at 06:00 every day; it is also one of the last in the parish to close, at 22:00.

Getting to La Mariscal
El Ejido metro station, at Avenida Patria and 6 de Diciembre, sits on the parish's southern edge, on the underground line that opened in December 2023.3 Inside the grid, Amazonas, 6 de Diciembre and 9 de Octubre carry traffic north and south, while Colón, Veintimilla, Luis Cordero, Jerónimo Carrión and Jorge Washington cross them east to west.1
The parish is split into four barrios: Orellana, El Quinde, Patria and 12 de Octubre.1
From mansions to La Zona
The Jijón family's villa opened in 1893 as the Palacio de La Circasiana, and the parish had its strongest decades from the 1940s to the 1970s.1 In 1957 La Favorita opened on Avenida Amazonas as Ecuador's first self-service supermarket.1 Office towers came later and residents left: the population fell from 18,801 in 1990 to 15,841 in 2001.1
Plaza Foch, Calle Calama, the Mercado Artesanal La Mariscal and the Museo Mindalae are the parish's best-known addresses.1 In early December, during the Fiestas de Quito, the Great Parade of Mariscal is held here.4

José Tamayo is home to Tres Gatos, with vegan dishes and its own baking, and to Roveta Coffee Experience, at Tamayo and Baquerizo Moreno, one of the Quito specialty cafés Primicias picked out in April 2024.5 On Mariscal Foch, La Casa de la Empanada (E4-215) opens Monday to Saturday 08:00–20:00, and Jerry's Café is further along at E9-76.
