The Canal Saint-Martin runs 4.6 km from the Bassin de la Villette to the Seine through nine locks. Napoleon ordered it in 1802, and the work, paid for with a new tax on wine, lasted until 1825.1 About 2 km between Rue du Faubourg du Temple and the Bastille were covered in the mid-19th century, so the open water starts north of Rue du Faubourg du Temple.1

The 10e also holds the Gare du Nord and the Gare de l’Est. Ten Belles opened by the canal in 2012 and HolyBelly in 2013, and specialty bars now dot the streets between the canal and the stations.34 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis has more cafés than any other street in the 10e, followed by Rue du Faubourg Saint-Martin.

Local tip: HolyBelly takes no reservations, and on weekdays outside school and bank holidays it is busiest from about 11:00 to 14:30; come at 09:00 for a table.4

Gare du Nord, Gare de l’Est and the canal

Gare du Nord counted 257 million passengers in 2024 and is described as the busiest railway station in Europe; Eurostar, RER B and D and métro lines 4 and 5 stop there, and lines 4 and 5 also link it to the Gare de l’Est.2 An underground passage between the two stations is planned for 2027.2

The current Gare du Nord building, by Jacques Ignace Hittorff, opened in 1864, and by 2015 it handled more than 700,000 passengers on a typical day, most of them commuters from the northern suburbs.2 Marcel Carné’s 1938 film Hôtel du Nord made the canal famous, although its canal scenes were rebuilt in a studio in Boulogne-Billancourt.1
