Trieste's cafés have long doubled as reading rooms. The three historic cafés still put paper newspapers on the tables, one of the rules written in Vienna when the city was Austro-Hungarian.1 Two of the cafés with Wi-Fi today also sell books.

Viale XX Settembre and the university streets have the most cafés with Wi-Fi, ahead of the Città Vecchia, with single addresses in the Borgo Teresiano, Barriera and San Giacomo.

Local tip: Knulp closes on Wednesdays; that day, Caffè San Marco, open until 23:00 on weekdays, is the bookshop café with Wi-Fi to head for.

Where these cafés are: Viale XX Settembre & San Giovanni (5), Piazza Unità & Città Vecchia (3), Piazza Goldoni & Barriera Vecchia (1), Borgo Teresiano (1), San Giacomo & Servola (1).

Caffè San Marco, café and bookshop

Caffè San Marco presents itself as a caffetteria, bookshop, restaurant and pastry shop at Via Battisti 18.2 It has Wi-Fi and a smoke-free room, and opens 08:30–23:00 on weekdays and until 23:45 on Saturdays. Italo Svevo, Umberto Saba and later Claudio Magris were regulars; Magris called it a heart of the city, a strong heart that beats calmly.3

The room has kept its Viennese Secession decoration, with paintings and stucco by Vito Timmel, Ugo Flumiani and others, and its wrought-iron tables outside face the Synagogue of Trieste. It reopened on 16 June 1997 after a restoration, and in 2005 it was recognized as a caffè storico d'Italia (historic café of Italy).3

Knulp, Cavana and the Riva

Knulp calls itself a bar libreria and describes its rooms as three faces of a space without borders, in the old center of a city with too many borders; it runs a program of exhibitions.4 It is at Via della Madonna del Mare 7, a short walk from the Joyce Museum at number 13, and opens 10:00–00:00 every day but Wednesday.5

Two more cafés with Wi-Fi are close by. Dafina, on Piazza di Cavana, has seating inside and out and its own toilets, and Cafe Retro is on the waterfront at Riva Nazario Sauro 16, with tables outside.

Campus bars on Via Alfonso Valerio

The University of Trieste grew out of a commerce school turned into a university by royal decree on 8 August 1924, and has about 15,000 students. Its main building on the Scoglietto hill, by Raffaello Fagnoni and Umberto Nordio, was begun on 19 September 1938 and finished under the Allied government after the Second World War; since 2010 the university has been organized in ten departments.6

Below it on Via Alfonso Valerio, Bar di Ingegneria at number 8/2 and Bar edificio H3 at 12/1 have Wi-Fi, and Eni Caffè Università at number 1 adds outdoor tables.

San Giovanni, Barriera and the Borgo

In San Giovanni, Il Posto delle Fragole, on Via Guglielmo De Pastrovich, is the bar that lent its name to a cooperative started in 1979 to help psychiatric patients back into work, an idea of Franco Basaglia's.7

Bar F, on Via dei Piccardi in Barriera, opens in the evening only, 17:30–01:00, with a smoke-free room. B. A. R., at Via Valdirivo 6 in the Borgo Teresiano, is smoke-free and air-conditioned, has toilets and sells coffee to take away, and Bar Sportivo is at Via dell'Istria 8e in San Giacomo.
