Lavington is a residential suburb about 5.5 km northwest of the CBD, low- to medium-density and home to upper-middle and upper-income households.1 Kileleshwa, about 5 km west of the center, sits between Lavington and Kilimani, divided from both mainly by the Kirichwa River; its electoral ward also takes in Chiromo, Muthangari and Riverside.2

Coffee has deep roots here. Most of Lavington was once St Austin's Mission of the French Holy Ghost Fathers,1 and a Nation history credits the mission's coffee with giving birth to Kenya's coffee industry.3 The cafés today are spread out, from French Mission Roastery on Riverside Lane to a second Spring Valley Coffee on the Lavington side.

Local tip: French Mission Roastery closes at 18:00 and all day on Sundays, so plan a weekday or Saturday visit.

The St Austin's coffee shamba

The order's bishops came up from their Bura mission and first pitched a tent near today's Nairobi Railway Station. The railway then hauled soil and a hundred arabica seedlings from the Bura shamba (farm) to the new mission.3 The trees were pulled out in 1945, when the coffee business no longer paid, but St Austin's church, begun on 20 April 1913 and opened on 28 October 1914, still stands in Lavington.3

Laibon Lenana, the Maasai leader, helped build the mission's first house, and Brother Solanus Zepper supervised work on the church.3

From leleshwa bush to high-rise

Kileleshwa's name comes from the Maa oleleishwa, the leleshwa bush, with the Bantu prefix ki- in place of ol-.2 Africans farmed here in the early 1900s until the colonial government evicted them between 1925 and 1927 to make way for European settlement.2 It stayed a suburb of bungalows into the early 2000s; zoning changes in 2005 opened it to apartment towers, and the 2019 census counted 22,216 people on the ward's 5.3 km².2

Lavington has so far avoided large residential high-rises, even as it gains upmarket bars, restaurants and nightclubs.1 In March 2024 Governor Johnson Sakaja proposed rezoning that would allow buildings of up to 75 floors in Kilimani, Kileleshwa and Lavington.2 Critics say towers approved against zoning rules have already strained roads, water supply and sewerage.2

Roasteries, juice bars and karak

French Mission Roastery on Riverside Lane roasts specialty coffee, has Wi-Fi and opens Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 18:00. Fraiche cafe and juice bar is on Hendred Road, and Spring Valley Coffee and Barista and Co each run a second branch here, alongside Geco Cafe, D's Place, Fit Kitchen and The CK Food and Lounge.

Karak & Go has two Lavington addresses of its own: 105 James Gichuru Road, and The K&G Garden at The Big House on Kabarsiran Avenue.4

Getting around Lavington and Kileleshwa

Roads completed between 2011 and 2013 tied Kileleshwa more directly to Kilimani, Lavington and Westlands.2 James Gichuru Road, which crosses Lavington,1 meets Waiyaki Way at the junction where the Nairobi Expressway ends.5 Nightclubs are a sore point: residents of Kileleshwa and Kilimani have complained about how many have opened.2

The Kirichwa, a tributary of the Nairobi River, runs through Lavington, and the Jaffery Sports Club Ground and the Lavington Green Shopping Centre are among its landmarks.1
