Westlands is a mixed-use district about 3 km northwest of the CBD, on the western side of the larger Parklands area.1 Offices, hotels, malls and hospitals moved in during the 1990s and early 2000s, when land and office space downtown grew scarce and expensive.1 Parklands, to the east, takes its name from City Park and has a large population of South Asian descent.2

For coffee, Westlands matches the CBD for choice, and two roasters, Connect Coffee Roasters and Sacred Mill Coffee Roasters, are here. Museum Hill, between Westlands and the center, adds a café on the grounds of the National Museum.3

Local tip: Combine the museum and a coffee: Vogue Cafe is on Museum Hill itself, so there is no taxi ride between the Snake Park and a cup.

Getting to Westlands

Waiyaki Way is the main road through the district, and Mpaka Road and Woodvale Grove hold much of its office stock; the Global Trade Centre rises at the corner of Waiyaki Way and Chiromo Lane.1 The Nairobi Expressway, completed in 2022, runs from Mlolongo past the airport and the CBD and ends at the James Gichuru Road junction on Waiyaki Way.4

Sarit Centre and the Waiyaki Way cafés

The Sarit Centre opened in April 1983 with two tenants and now has 74,000 m² of floor space over six floors, with parking for 4,000 cars.5 Barista and Co is on Level 1, in Phase 3 off Pio Gama Pinto Road. Westgate Shopping Mall is also in Westlands.1

On Waiyaki Way, Cafe Kaya is in Viking House; Cafe Lungo is at 65 Muthithi Road. Farther north, Sigiria Coffee House opens daily from 07:00 to 17:00 and has Wi-Fi. Rjs Coffee Shop, Slush Coffee World, Attibassi Coffee Kenya and Sasini Tea and Coffee are nearby in central Westlands.

Museum Hill and Parklands

The East African Natural History Society founded the National Museum in 1910; it stands on Museum Hill near Uhuru Highway, and the Nairobi Snake Park and a botanic garden with a nature trail share its grounds.3 Vogue Cafe is on Museum Hill, with Wi-Fi, tables inside and out, and card payment.

East of Westlands, Brioche Café Bistro is on Parklands Road and Leaf & Bean Cafe on City Park Crescent. The Aga Khan University Hospital and the Aga Khan Sports Centre are among Parklands' landmarks, and the area is laid out in numbered avenues.2 The British laid Parklands out as a residential area for civil servants, and in the 1940s and 1950s it was among the most congested suburbs around Nairobi.2

Roasters, Spring Valley and karak

Spring Valley Coffee has its Westlands café on Lower Kabete Road in Spring Valley. When the Specialty Coffee Association profiled Kenya's home market, the roaster ran eight cafés across Nairobi with a ninth being built, and it had just opened its first café abroad, in London.6

Karak & Go gives its Westlands address as Manohar Centre on Mpaka Road and runs further branches in Lavington and at T-Mall on Lang'ata Road.7 Connect Coffee Roasters and Sacred Mill Coffee Roasters both roast specialty coffee in the district.
