Chapalita was founded on 21 February 1943 by José Aguilar Figueroa as one of the first developments west of Guadalajara, and it lies across the boundary between the municipalities of Guadalajara and Zapopan.1 It is also known as Ciudad Jardín (Garden City).1 Its most distinctive houses are Art Deco and Modernist, built in the 1940s and 1950s, and Calle 12 de Diciembre is its oldest residential street.2

The colonia runs from Avenida Lázaro Cárdenas to Avenida Niño Obrero, which becomes Avenida Tizoc at Avenida Tepeyac.2 Its cafés follow the two main roads, Avenida Guadalupe and Avenida Tepeyac, and several are a short walk from the Glorieta Chapalita, the roundabout park where the neighborhood gathers on Sundays.3 Chapalita’s cafés range from a La Flor de Córdoba branch to a board-game café.

Local tip: Have breakfast at La Flor de Córdoba on Avenida Guadalupe, open daily from 07:00, then walk to the glorieta when the Sunday art fair opens at 11:00.3

Getting around Chapalita on foot

Avenida Guadalupe and Avenida Tepeyac carry the traffic; for walking, Playas y Plazas suggests Avenida Parque Juan Diego, Avenida Chapalita and Calle 12 de Diciembre. The Glorieta Chapalita joins Avenida Guadalupe, Avenida de las Rosas and Calle San Ignacio, and a recent remodel added sidewalks, crosswalks and a bike lane, though drivers don’t always yield at the crossings.2

On Sundays the Vía RecreActiva closes the westbound lane around the glorieta to cars. A council of residents, the colonos, holds much of the local authority, and neighbors coordinate security with the police through meetings and group chats.2

The glorieta and its Sunday art fair

The glorieta was designed by Salvador Sierra and José Amezcua as a children’s park and served as one from 1945 to 1970. A tianguis (street market) moved in during the 1970s; in 1980 the Consejo de Residentes de Chapalita took the space back, remodeled it and moved the market to nearby streets.3

The Sunday art show began in 1989, during the Fiestas de Octubre, as a Jardín de Arte promoted by the Centro Cultural Las Calas, and it has run every Sunday since. Artists show their work from 11:00 to 19:00 in 70 spaces assigned by Zapopan, under ash trees, casuarinas, ficus and palms, and the municipal orchestra often plays.3

Cafés on Avenida Guadalupe and Avenida Tepeyac

La Flor de Córdoba, the roaster that began in Guadalajara’s Centro in 1938, has a café on Avenida Guadalupe with outdoor seating.4 It opens daily from 07:00 to 23:00: the earliest start in Chapalita and, from Monday to Thursday, the latest close. El Ático Café, also on Avenida Guadalupe, has a terrace and opens Monday to Saturday, 09:00–21:00.

El Terrible Juan’s Chapalita branch is at Avenida Tepeyac 1115b, on the corner of Calle Árbol, open Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 22:00.5 Also on Tepeyac, Board Game La Madriguera at number 947 opens Friday and Saturday 15:00–00:00 and Sunday 14:00–22:00. Kanata Coffee is west of the glorieta at 4497 Avenida Tepeyac, and La Petite Pause is at 1310 Calle San Ernesto.

Planning a Sunday in Chapalita

Sunday is the glorieta’s busiest day and the thinnest for coffee. El Terrible Juan and El Ático Café are closed, La Madriguera opens at 14:00, and La Flor de Córdoba keeps its 07:00 start.5 The art fair sets up from 11:00, which leaves time for breakfast on Avenida Guadalupe before the stalls open.3
