For a late coffee, start in Colonia Americana. In October 2022, Time Out ranked it the coolest neighborhood in the world, citing its creative squats, Art Deco mansions, café culture and nightlife.1 Avenida Chapultepec runs through the district; it was laid out in 1948 as Avenida Lafayette and renamed in the early 1950s; since the Paseo Chapultepec project of 2004 it has hosted art, music, literature and food on weekends.2

Some of its bars serve coffee too: El Habanero Negro on López Cotilla pours carajillos alongside beer and gin and tonics, and Bar Américas, at Avenida Chapultepec Sur 507, stays open until 05:00.3 Colonia Americana has the most late cafés, and the rest are spread between the Centro Histórico, Chapalita, the south and the north; the latest of them closes at 01:00.

Local tip: Order a carajillo puesto to see the layers or shakeado for a frothy one. On December and January nights, when lows drop to about 11°C, an indoor table at Darjeeling Tea Room on Morelos is the warmer choice until midnight.

Where these cafés are: Colonia Americana & Chapultepec (4), North Guadalajara (1), Chapalita (1), Plaza del Sol & the south (1), Centro Histórico (1).

The carajillo, Mexico's after-dinner coffee

A carajillo is espresso with Licor 43, a sweet liqueur from southern Spain, served over ice. Ordered puesto, the coffee and liqueur arrive in separate layers; ordered shakeado, the drink is shaken until frothy and poured into a lowball glass.4

In Spain the carajillo is an early-morning drink in working-class bars. In Mexico it became the drink of the sobremesa, the stretch of conversation after a meal is finished, and a common start to a night out; wealthy young people in Mexico City took it up in the early 2000s.4

Café de olla on cold nights

Café de olla is coffee brewed with piloncillo (unrefined cane sugar) and canela (cinnamon). It takes its name from the olla de barro, the clay pot it is made in, and comes in jarritos, small clay mugs. It is drunk above all in cold weather, and one account traces it to the Revolution, when the adelitas brewed it for soldiers over night fires.6

Guadalajara has its cold nights: on the 1991–2020 normals, January's mean daily low is 10.6°C and December's 11.1°C.7 La Flor de Córdoba, which two cousins from Ixtlán del Río, Nayarit, opened in 1938 as a small shop called El Dromedario at the corner of Santa Mónica and Independencia, has café de olla on its menu.5

Tea rooms and evening cafés in Colonia Americana

For the latest cup, Darjeeling Tea Room at 1491 Morelos is open until 01:00 on Fridays and until 00:00 Tuesday to Thursday and at weekends; it opens at 13:30 on weekdays and 14:30 on Saturdays and Sundays. Down the same street, El rincón de los brujos at 1196 Morelos opens only in the evening, 18:00–22:00 Monday to Thursday and until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

For coffee rather than tea, El Terrible Juan on José Guadalupe Montenegro serves 08:00–22:00 Monday to Saturday. Fragola Neveria Cafeteria, which sells ice cream as well as coffee, stays open until 00:00 every day of the week.

Late cafés in Chapalita, the south and the north

In Chapalita, Board Game La Madriguera at 947 Avenida Tepeyac is open 15:00–00:00 on Fridays and Saturdays and 14:00–22:00 on Sundays. In the south, Casa Musa at 2581 Avenida Lapislazuli opens Monday to Saturday 18:30–23:00. North of the center, BazArte café at 1305 Calle Siete Colinas serves until 22:30, from 11:00 on weekdays and from 14:00 on Saturdays.

Downtown, Santuario de la Bicicleta on Jesús González Ortega shuts between 13:00 and 17:00, then reopens for the evening and serves until 22:00, Monday to Saturday.

Paying the bill after dark

In Mexico a tip is voluntary. Profeco, the federal consumer agency, says a tip can never be added to the bill automatically or presented as a mandatory charge; the custom is 10–15% of the total, and as of 2026 businesses that add one without consent face fines from MX$311 to more than MX$3 million.8
