Foz do Douro, the mouth of the Douro, is where Porto meets the Atlantic. It was a town of its own from 1833 to 1836 before joining Porto, its old core is called Foz Velha, and in 2013 the parish merged into Aldoar, Foz do Douro e Nevogilde.1
Its seafront promenade, lined with cafés, bars and gardens, is among the most sought-after places in the city.1 Coffee here is often taken outside, at esplanadas (terraces) that range from a kiosk in the Passeio Alegre garden to a confeitaria facing the sea.
Local tip: Ride tram 1 to Passeio Alegre in the morning, then walk along the seafront to Tavi on Rua da Senhora da Luz, open from 08:30, for coffee on its terrace over the Atlantic.

Getting to Foz
Heritage tram 1 follows the river from Infante past the Alfândega and Massarelos to Passeio Alegre, and tram 18 reaches the same terminus from Clérigos and Carmo by way of the tram museum in Massarelos. Trams run every 30 minutes, and line 1 is popular with visitors.2
Along the shore, Eating Point stands on the Ciclovia da Foz, the seafront cycle path.
Passeio Alegre and the Chalé Suiço
The Jardim do Passeio Alegre, lined with palms and landscaped by Émile David in the late 19th century, is where the trams end. Its small chalet, from 1874, is older than the garden; it hosted literary gatherings with Camilo Castelo Branco and Ramalho Ortigão and carries a white-painted lamb on its roof.3
The garden also holds two obelisks by Nasoni brought from the Quinta da Prelada, a granite fountain from the old São Francisco convent and a public toilet from 1910 with Art Nouveau tiles.3 The Chalé Suiço, on Rua do Passeio Alegre, serves coffee at outdoor tables.
The lighthouse and the pergola
At the river mouth, the Felgueiras lighthouse, a 10 m hexagonal tower on the jetty, was built in 1886, switched off in 2009 and reopened on 13 December 2021.4 Work on a mole on that bank had begun in 1790.4
North along Avenida do Brasil, the council approved plans to improve the avenue in 1930, and the pergola was finished the following year; around 1860 the river mouth was still a small fishing village.5 In the old core, Bishop Miguel da Silva commissioned the palace and church inside the Forte de São João Baptista in 1527.1
Cafés along the shore
Tavi has served Foz since 1935, and the Paiva family bought it in 2006; its terrace looks out over the ocean.6 The confeitaria at 363 Rua da Senhora da Luz is open daily 08:30–20:00, and its bakery across the street at 356 opens at 07:15 on weekdays.
At Street Coffee opens daily 08:30–18:30, Concha Douro on Avenida do Doutor Antunes Guimarães serves daily 08:00–20:00, and Mademoiselle opens 08:30–19:00 except on Mondays. A Xícara, a tea house, is at 912 Rua de Gondarém.
Terrace weather is not guaranteed. Porto is one of the wettest major cities in Europe, and November to January bring the most rain.7
