In Porto an espresso is a cimbalino, a word taken from La Cimbali, the Italian brand of espresso machine.1 The old rooms still stand in the Baixa (downtown). The Majestic opened on Rua de Santa Catarina on 17 December 1921 under the name Elite, and Guarany has looked onto Avenida dos Aliados since 1933.23 Leitaria da Quinta do Paço, a dairy brand dating to 1920, has filled its éclairs with chantilly since its founder brought the recipe back from Switzerland in 1960.4

Specialty coffee arrived late and grew quickly. Porto had six specialty coffee shops in 2019 and more than 50 by October 2025, according to a survey cited by Barista Magazine, which credits Combi, SO Coffee and 7g Roaster with the first wave.5 Combi started in 2014 as a coffee van and opened its café in a former garage in Bonfim in 2017.613 In October 2025 the third Porto Coffee Week, held in the old Alfândega building, drew 3,606 visitors over its last three days.5

Coffee does not stop at the city line: Vila Nova de Gaia faces Porto from the south bank of the Douro, and Matosinhos lies just north of the city.7 The Dom Luís I bridge, opened in 1886, joins Porto and Gaia on two decks.8

How to order coffee in Porto

Ask for um cimbalino and you get a short espresso; um café means the same cup anywhere in Portugal.9 For a longer black coffee, Porto says americano where the south says abatanado.9 A pingo or pingado is an espresso with milk, the cup Lisbon calls a garoto.1011 A galão is espresso topped with steamed milk in a tall glass, galão claro adds more milk, and a meia de leite is half coffee, half milk.11

Old counters keep two more orders. A carioca de café is a weaker, cheaper cup, usually explained as water run a second time through the grounds of the previous espresso.12 Café com cheirinho comes with a drop of brandy or aguardente (grape spirit).11 Milky coffee is a morning order, or one for the break around 16:00, often with a cake.11

Most people sit down, and a cimbalino standing at the counter is for when you are in a hurry; takeaway cups are only now catching on.9 Tipping isn't expected, but rounding up is common: leave €2 on a €1.50 coffee.9 The specialty bars keep daytime hours, and several close at 17:00.

FAQ

Cafés in Porto: common questions

How much does a coffee cost in Porto?

A cimbalino (espresso) at a traditional Porto café cost €0.70–1.00 in 2025, and €1.00–2.00 with specialty beans. Cappuccinos and flat whites at specialty cafés ran to about €4 in 2026. A pastel de nata cost €1.10–1.60 at Porto bakeries in 2024 and 2025; Manteigaria on Largo de São Domingos charged €1.50 a tart and €1 an espresso in July 2026.

Which neighborhood of Porto has the most cafés?

Aliados & Clérigos and Marquês & Paranhos have the most cafés, followed by Bolhão & Santa Catarina. Aliados and Bolhão are both in the Baixa, Porto's downtown, with the Guarany and the Majestic among their cafés; for confeitarias, Aliados shares the lead with Marquês & Paranhos.

Why is an espresso called a cimbalino in Porto?

The word comes from La Cimbali, the Italian espresso-machine brand long used in Porto's cafés. Asking for um café gets you the same short espresso. Nearby orders have northern names too: a pingo or pingado is an espresso with milk, the cup Lisbon calls a garoto, and a longer black coffee is an americano rather than the southern abatanado.

When did Café Majestic in Porto open?

Café Majestic opened on 17 December 1921 on Rua de Santa Catarina, designed by the architect João Queiroz. It first traded as the Elite, a name that sounded monarchist in republican Porto, and was renamed Majestic. It is at number 112, opens Monday to Saturday until 23:30 and closes on Sundays.

Do you tip in cafés in Porto?

Tipping isn't expected in Porto cafés, though rounding up the bill is common and tips are welcome. On a €1.50 coffee, leaving €2 is plenty. Most people sit down for coffee and drink a quick cimbalino at the counter only when they are in a hurry.

Where are the specialty coffee roasters in Porto?

Combi roasts and serves at 29 Rua do Morgado de Mateus in Bonfim, in a former garage it turned into a café in 2017, and von&vonnie roasts at 10 Rua do Heroísmo nearby. Senzu roasts on Rua do Rosário in Cedofeita. Across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, 7g Roaster roasts at 52 Rua de França.
