Apgujeong takes its name from a 15th-century pavilion built by the Joseon official Han Myeong-hoe; the Hanja translate as "seagull pavilion".1 Until 1962 the area belonged to Gyeonggi Province; it was built up from the 1970s, and Gangnam District was carved out of Seongdong District in 1975.5

Apgujeong and Cheongdam now rank among the wealthiest neighborhoods in Korea.12 The 760 m stretch of Apgujeong-ro from Apgujeongrodeo station to the Cheongdam crossroad is Cheongdam Fashion Street, and many K-pop management companies have their headquarters nearby.2 Cafés fill the numbered lanes between them, from the blocks around Dosan Park to Seolleung-ro.

Local tip: Plan walks between Dosan Park and Cheongdam on Naver Maps or Kakao Maps, and take the subway rather than a taxi between 08:00–10:00 and 17:00–19:00.
