In Korean a 베이커리 카페 (bakery café) is a café that bakes on site and sells bread as much as coffee. Bread has become a reason to travel: 빵지순례 (ppangji sullye, bread pilgrimage) is the word for touring cities for their bakeries, and in the 2024 summer travel season four of the ten most-searched restaurants on the Tmap navigation app were bakeries.1
Seoul holds its Cafe & Bakery Fair twice a year; in 2026 the dates were February 25–28 and August 27–30.2 Within the city, Hongdae and Yeonnam-dong have about one in seven of the bakery cafés, with Gangnam second and Bukchon and Samcheong-dong third, then Seongsu-dong and Euljiro.
Local tip: For a bakery breakfast, Onion in Bukchon opens at 07:00 on weekdays (09:00 at weekends), Brovel Coffee Roastery on Teheran-ro 25-gil at 07:00 daily and Passion 5 on Itaewon-ro at 07:30; several Hongdae bakery cafés don't open until 11:00 or noon.

The 대형 베이커리 카페 (large bakery café) is a recent arrival. National Tax Service figures obtained by the office of lawmaker Park Sung-hoon counted 27 bakery cafés of 100 pyeong (about 330 m²) or more nationwide in 2014, 109 in 2023 and 137 in 2024.3
Part of the appeal is tax. A bakery counts as a food business and can qualify for Korea's special gift-tax treatment for handing a family business to the next generation, which an ordinary coffee shop cannot, so a large plot run as a bakery café for at least ten years can pass to children for far less tax than the land alone would draw.3
소금빵 (sogeumppang, salt bread) is a roll with butter rolled into the dough and coarse salt on top; the butter melts as it bakes, leaving a hollow, moist inside and a crisp base.45 Known in Japan as shio pan (塩パン), it came from Pain Maison, a bakery in Yawatahama in Ehime prefecture, and spread through Korean bakeries around 2021.45
Salt bread queues in Seongsu-dong can wrap around whole blocks, and Jayeondo Salt Bread is one of the neighborhood's viral names.1 Its Dosan branch, 자연도소금빵in도산, is at Dosan-daero 49-gil 41.
The croffle, croissant dough pressed in a waffle iron, reached Seoul in November 2018 at the café Aufglet, spread across the city in 2019, and took off at home in 2020, when people baked them during the pandemic and shared the photos.6 East of the center, shops named for it include 크로플31 on Wangsan-ro 43-gil and 크로플덕 오리아가씨 on Dapsimni-ro.
Prices are a running complaint, nicknamed ppang-flation. Korea Credit Data found salt bread up 30% and bagels up 44% over three years, and a Fair Trade Commission report put Korea's bread price index at 129 in 2023, above the United States (125), Japan (120) and France (118).1 A 7,000-won croissant and a 6,000-won bagel are typical examples as of 2025.1
Big bakery cafés charge the most. At one in Gapyeong, outside Seoul, salt bread cost 4,200 won, an americano 5,800 won and a signature latte 9,000 won in 2025, against about 3,000 won for salt bread and 4,000–5,000 won for an americano or latte at franchise chains.3
