Bukchon, "north village", is named for its position north of the Cheonggyecheon stream and Jongno, and in the Joseon era it was the quarter of high officials and nobility.1 Around 1920 Chŏng Segwŏn's company, Kŏnyangsa, built hanok here with glass windows and electricity, according to his descendants to keep the area from being taken over by Japanese residents.1

About 6,100 people lived in Bukchon in 2024, the year it received 6.4 million visitors.1 Samcheong-dong, east of Gyeongbokgung, has small art galleries among its restored hanok, and one explanation of its name is clear water, clear mountains and clear-minded people.43

Local tip: Onion's Anguk hanok opens at 07:00 on weekdays, three hours before tourist hours in Bukchon's red zone begin at 10:00; go early for a floor seat.
