Ciudad Vieja: Bacacay and the pedestrian streets

Sarandí, the old town's main street, became a pedestrian walkway in 1992 between the Puerta de la Ciudadela and Pérez Castellano, and the walkway was extended beyond Plaza Constitución in 2005.34 The street runs 850 meters from the gateway on Plaza Independencia to the Rambla, past museums, galleries, bookshops, restaurants and cafés.4

La Diaria at Bacacay 1306 and Palacio del Café at Bacacay 1309, a few doors apart, both have outdoor and indoor tables. La Diaria stays open until midnight from Wednesday to Sunday and opens at 16:30 at weekends. La Ronda Cafe at Ciudadela 1182 puts tables outside too.

Along the rambla

The 22.2 km rambla links Parque Rodó, Punta Carretas, Pocitos, Buceo and Malvín along the Río de la Plata on its way to Carrasco, and it fills with walkers, joggers, cyclists, anglers and mate drinkers.5 In summer a tourism police unit patrols it.5

In Parque Rodó, El Faro at Julio Herrera y Reissig 633 has smoke-free outdoor tables, and Escaramuza, the bookshop café at Doctor Pablo de María 1185, has tables outside as well.6 In Punta Carretas, Hoy Te Quiero at Jaime Zudáñez 2601 opens Tuesday to Saturday 08:00–00:00, and Koffee Skates at Coronel Mora 495 serves weekdays from 12:00 to 20:30 and Saturdays from 10:00.

Buceo, Malvín and Pocitos

On Avenida Luis Alberto de Herrera in Buceo, The Lab at No. 1109 and Ramona Cafe at No. 1196 both have outdoor seating, close enough to try one and walk to the other. La Pantalla at Míchigan 1404 in Malvín opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–20:00, with outdoor, indoor and air-conditioned tables.

In Pocitos, Barú Café on Presidente Gestido has outdoor tables and takeaway. Pan Comido Cafe in Prado has outdoor seating, and in Cordón, Healthyway at Colonia 1260 and Macoco Café at Maldonado 1775 both put tables on the sidewalk.

Smoke, mate and the outdoor table

Uruguay banned smoking in enclosed public spaces on 1 March 2006, the first country in Latin America to do so, and bars and restaurants caught allowing it faced fines of more than US$1,100 or a three-day closure.7 Indoors is therefore the smoke-free side of a café; El Faro in Parque Rodó keeps its outdoor area smoke-free as well.

Montevideans commonly walk the streets with a mate and a thermos of hot water, and drinking it in public is ordinary.8
