El Poblado is Comuna 14 (district 14), the southeastern part of Medellín, which runs from the Medellín River up toward the eastern mountains.1 It is also where the city started. In 1616 Francisco Herrera y Campuzano founded the first European settlement in the Aburrá Valley on what is now Parque El Poblado; the Spanish later moved the administrative center, and El Poblado stayed a marginal township until the 20th century.1

The tightest cluster of cafés is in Manila, a barrio that began as a farm, near Avenida El Poblado, Avenida Las Vegas, Calle 10 and Calle 12.2 Its short streets now mix specialty cafés with boutique hotels, hostels and coworking spaces.2 Others are spread along Carrera 43A, the hillside above Provenza and Ciudad del Río by the river.

Local tip: For the earliest coffee in El Poblado, go to Carrera 43A at 9 Sur: La Galería Café-Bar opens at 06:00 on weekdays, and Buñuelos de la Gruta, a few doors along, at 06:30 every day.

Getting around El Poblado

Three metro stations serve the comuna, El Poblado, Aguacatala and Ayurá, and several bus lines run from it to the Centro.1 Feeder buses link the hillside barrios with the Industriales, Poblado and Aguacatala stations.3 The main roads are Avenida Las Vegas and the avenue from El Poblado to Envigado, which was paved and straightened as the area grew into a district of country homes.3

From township to Milla de Oro

Wealthy families began moving to El Poblado in the early 1900s, and it was incorporated into the city in the 1950s.1 In the 1970s it became home to many of the city's richest residents and picked up the nickname Milla de Oro (Golden Mile), and the Zona Rosa nightlife district took shape at the same time.1 About two-thirds of its homes, 66.5%, are in stratum 6, the top band of Colombia's socioeconomic scale.3

Landmarks include the Church of San José, Parque Lleras and the El Castillo Museum, a Gothic-style castle from the 1930s, and Universidad EAFIT and Universidad CES have their campuses here.1
