Before brunch arrived, Antioquia already had a late, heavy breakfast: the calentado, from recalentar (to reheat). It began as a way to use the previous day's leftovers: rice, beans, plantain and meat, topped with a fried egg and served with an arepa (corn cake). It is eaten mostly on weekends, with coffee or hot chocolate, and in 2025 TasteAtlas ranked it 16th among the world's best breakfasts.1
The imported version grew fastest in Provenza, Manila and around Parque Lleras, and Medellín Guru calls El Poblado the city's brunch capital. Several places there serve brunch every day of the week rather than only on weekends.2
Local tip: Order the calentado on a weekend morning, when it is most often eaten, with a coffee or a hot chocolate on the side.1

The paisa breakfast on a brunch menu
Many brunch menus keep a local plate next to the eggs Benedict. A desayuno paisa (Antioquian breakfast) brings rice and beans, eggs, sausage and arepas with fresh cheese, and arepas de chócolo (fresh-corn arepas) come at one Poblado café with mozzarella, two eggs and sausage.2
To drink, the local choice is a tinto (black filter coffee), a pintadito, which is coffee with a splash of milk, or a chaqueta, black coffee mixed with hot aguapanela, the drink of dissolved panela (unrefined cane sugar) found across Antioquia and the Coffee Axis.3

Where Medellín's brunch cafés are
Brunch is spread across the city rather than clustered, from El Poblado and Belén & Guayabal to Provenza, La América and Laureles. Al Alma runs cafés in Provenza, at Calle 8 #35-37, and in El Poblado, on Carrera 45. The chain is best known for brunch served every day of the week and for its freshly roasted coffee.6
In Laureles, Semilla Café's menu leans on salads and healthy dishes and is vegan- and vegetarian-friendly; its upper floor is a coworking space.7 In La América, Remedios Cafe-arte at Transversal 45F #82-41 opens daily 09:00–20:00 and also bakes.
In Belén, Vibras Café keeps the latest hours of the group. It opens at 08:00 and stays open until 21:30 Monday to Thursday, 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays and 20:30 on Sundays. Como en casa is at Calle 20A #78-34.
Brunch timing and weekend hours
Weekend hours are often shorter, which is the opposite of what brunch suggests. Origin Café 777 closes at 14:00 on Saturdays and Sundays, while its weekday service runs until 18:00. Arrive by late morning on weekends.
In Laureles, Semilla Café on Calle 39C keeps the same 08:00–20:30 hours from Monday to Saturday and closes on Sundays, so plan a Laureles brunch for Saturday.
