Mitte is the locality at the center of Berlin, home to 108,254 people at the end of 2024, with Museum Island, the Fernsehturm and the Brandenburg Gate along Unter den Linden.1 From 1961 to 1990 it lay in East Berlin, almost surrounded by the Wall.1 Its 13 neighborhoods run from Dorotheenstadt and Friedrichstadt in the south to the Spandauer Vorstadt and the Rosenthaler Vorstadt in the north.1

Most of Mitte’s cafés sit north of the Spree, on Brunnenstraße, Torstraße, Rosenthaler Straße and Weinbergsweg. To the south, around Gendarmenmarkt and Unter den Linden, there are fewer, among them Rausch’s chocolate house on Charlottenstraße.

Local tip: To work for a few hours, go to St. Oberholz on a weekday: the café on Rosenthaler Platz opens at 08:00, two hours earlier than at weekends.5
