Schöneberg was first recorded as a village in 1264, became a city in 1898 and joined Greater Berlin in 1920; today it is a locality of 125,060 people in the borough of Tempelhof-Schöneberg.1 John F. Kennedy gave his “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech at Rathaus Schöneberg on 26 June 1963, and the area around Nollendorfplatz has been the center of Berlin’s gay life since the 1920s; Christopher Isherwood lived around the corner on Nollendorfstraße.1

Most cafés sit on a line running south from Nollendorfplatz: Motzstraße and Eisenacher Straße, Winterfeldtplatz, then Goltzstraße, which has the most, and on to Akazienstraße and Hauptstraße. Potsdamer Straße and Grunewaldstraße have a second, smaller group: Caffè Mania at Grunewaldstraße 89 opens at 07:30 on weekdays, and Mr. Toast Café at Potsdamer Straße 132 at 09:30.

Local tip: Go to Winterfeldtplatz on a Saturday, when around 250 stalls set up from 08:00, and get off the U2 at Nollendorfplatz.42
