Wedding and Gesundbrunnen formed one borough until Berlin’s 2001 reform merged them into Mitte.1 After the First World War, Wedding was called Red Wedding for its militant, largely Communist working class, and after 1945 it lay in the French sector of West Berlin; on Bernauer Straße the houses on the north side were French sector, those on the south side Soviet.1
Gesundbrunnen takes its name from a mineral spring said to heal and keep people young: in 1751 the apothecary Wilhelm Behm obtained a royal privilege to open a spa there, first called Friedrichs-Gesundbrunnen after Friedrich II.2 Turkish families settled in Wedding from the 1960s, as in Kreuzberg and Neukölln, and about two thirds of Gesundbrunnen’s residents have a migration background.32
Local tip: Yöre Bake & Food at Müllerstraße 12 opens at 04:30 every day, the earliest start on Wedding’s main street, and the U6 runs beneath the whole street.4
