Prenzlauer Berg is the southern and most urban part of the borough of Pankow, with 169,882 residents at the end of 2024.1 It was laid out under the Hobrecht Plan of 1862 as a largely working-class district, and more than 80 percent of its housing was built before 1948.1 In GDR times its tenements housed artists, students and intellectuals; after 1990, renovation and rising rents pushed many longtime residents out.1
Cafés follow the squares and the streets between them. Schönhauser Allee, Kollwitzstraße, Kastanienallee and Prenzlauer Allee have the most, and visitBerlin points to the cafés around Helmholtzplatz and Kollwitzplatz.2 Most close by 18:00; Anna Blume on Kollwitzstraße and Kaffee Marlene on Kastanienallee are among the exceptions.
Local tip: Come to Kollwitzplatz on a Thursday after 12:00 for the organic market, then walk up Kollwitzstraße to Five Elephant at number 98, which closes at 18:00.6

Yumi Choi and Kiduk Reus opened the first Bonanza in Prenzlauer Berg in 2006, at a time when it was one of the only shops nearby serving light-roast specialty coffee.5 Choi has called Oderberger Straße one of Berlin’s best culinary streets.5 visitBerlin describes Oderberger Straße and Kastanienallee as long-standing addresses for Berlin designer fashion.2
Bonanza Coffee Heroes is at Oderberger Straße 35, open weekdays 08:30–18:30 and weekends 10:00–19:00. Five Elephant has two branches here, at Schwedter Straße 11 and Kollwitzstraße 98, both open from 08:00 on weekdays. Krone Kitchen & Coffee at Oderberger Straße 38 opens daily at 09:00. On Hufelandstraße, MaRue Café at number 21 opens at 08:00 on weekdays and Camino at 16 at 09:00.
The Ökomarkt on Kollwitzplatz, East Berlin’s oldest organic market, has run every Thursday since 1996, from 12:00 to 19:00, with around 40 stalls selling farm vegetables, Brandenburg cheese and Demeter bread.6 On the streets off the square, Kaffee Käthe at Kollwitzstraße 38 serves breakfast and brunch 09:00–17:00 and closes on Wednesdays.
Anna Blume at Kollwitzstraße 83 bakes more than 20 cakes a day in its own patisserie next door, and its terrace is a summer brunch spot.4 It opens daily 08:00–22:00. On Rykestraße, No Fire No Glory at number 45 and 44 Brekkie at 44 both serve daily from 09:00.
The Wasserturm at Rykestraße and Knaackstraße was finished in 1877; under the Nazis it was used as a makeshift concentration camp.1 Mauerpark, on the former border strip between East and West Berlin, holds a flea market on Sundays and open-air concerts in summer.1
For a late coffee, Haliflor at Schwedter Straße 26 stays open until 02:00 every day, and Kaffee Marlene at Kastanienallee 103 until midnight. Café Coconut at Danziger Straße 144 never closes.
