Antigua was founded in 1543 in the Panchoy Valley as Santiago de los Caballeros, the third capital of Guatemala. After the Santa Marta earthquakes of 1773 the Crown moved the capital and ordered the damaged city abandoned, which is how it came to be called La Antigua, "old" Guatemala.1 Its grid of churches, convents and ruins became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, and the town, at 1,545 m, now lives mainly on tourism.1

Coffee arrived early and stayed. The first plants in Guatemala grew in the convent gardens of Santiago de los Caballeros, and small plantations around Antigua prospered in the 1850s and 1860s; the country has exported coffee since 1859.2 The valley is ringed by three volcanoes, Agua, Fuego and Acatenango. Its pumice soil holds the moisture that a modest rainfall doesn't supply, and Fuego, one of Guatemala's three active volcanoes, still drops mineral-rich ash on the slopes.3

"Café Antigua" is a denomination of origin registered to the Guatemalan state, inscribed in December 2011. APCA, the growers' association, puts the farms at 1,400–2,000 m and the harvest from November to April.4 Some cafés in town serve beans from their own land: 12 Onzas, on 4a Calle Oriente, says its coffee comes straight from its own farm, roasted fresh.5

How coffee works in Antigua Guatemala

Guatemala's traditional hot drinks are café puro, plain black coffee; chocolate, cacao ground and dissolved in sweetened water; and atol de elote, a sweet corn drink.6 Breakfast is where coffee is most at home. The desayuno chapín, Guatemala's standard breakfast plate of eggs, beans and plantain, is served with a cup of coffee alongside.7

Many restaurant bills print a propina sugerida, a suggested tip, of 10%. No Guatemalan law makes tipping compulsory, and DIACO, the consumer-protection agency, says a business can't force one: you can pay a different amount, or ask for an added tip to be taken off the invoice.8

The specialty bars differ on laptops. 12 Onzas has a quieter workspace at the back, behind its open-air courtyard, while the small rooms at Raíz Café and Alegría Café suit a short stop better than a working morning.9 Pour-overs are made with single-farm Guatemalan coffee: in December 2025, Alegría was brewing a natural from Finca Santa Isabel in Esquipulas on a V60.10

The dry season runs from November to February, rain is heaviest from June to September, and nights stay cool, with January lows averaging about 11 °C.1 Most cafés open by 08:00 and close by 20:00. Café El Portal on 5a Avenida Norte starts at 06:30, and Hecho en Casa on 7a Avenida Norte serves until 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Tuk-tuks stop around 22:00; after about 23:00, take a taxi.11
