Parque Central fills a whole block between 4a and 5a Calle and 4a and 5a Avenida, and Antigua's street numbers start at its south-east corner, by the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales.1 The fountain in the middle, the Mermaid Fountain, is a reconstruction of the one Diego de Porres built in 1737, and the benches around it are a standard meeting point.2

No part of town has more cafés. They line the calles on either side of the square, from 12 Onzas and Sat Nam on 4a Calle Oriente to Café Bohème and 3 Hermanos on 5a Calle Poniente, and carry on west along 3a and 6a Calle Poniente.

Local tip: For a volcano view with breakfast, go up early: Café Bohème's roof faces Fuego from 07:30, and Rooftop Antigua on 6a Avenida Norte opens at 08:00.

Palace, cathedral and city hall

The Palacio de los Capitanes Generales was begun in 1558 as the residence of the Spanish captain general and was abandoned after the 1773 earthquakes.2 Work on the Cathedral of Santiago began in 1545, was slowed by earthquakes, and the church became a cathedral in 1743. The City Hall was rebuilt after the San Casimiro earthquake of 1751.2

Café Condesa, at 5a Avenida Norte 4 on the west side, occupies a building dating from 1549 and is known for coffee, pancakes and breakfast. Along Dusty Roads calls it an Antigua institution that the newer third-wave bars have partly displaced.3

Getting to the square

Shared shuttle vans run from La Aurora airport in Guatemala City until 20:00 and cost about Q150 (as of May 2025); the drive takes 45 minutes to an hour.1 Most drop passengers in the center, and from there everything is walkable: the main sights fit in an area less than a kilometer across.1

Many corners have no street sign and the sidewalks are narrow and uneven, so count blocks from the square instead of looking for names.1 Banks near the square change money and often open seven days a week until 19:00 or 20:00; ATM fees are fixed, so fewer, larger withdrawals cost less.1

Specialty bars on the calles around the park

12 Onzas, at 4a Calle Oriente 5, is open daily 07:00–19:00 and pours coffee from its owners' farm, Concepción Buena Vista in San Martín Jilotepeque, with an open-air courtyard out back.43 West of the square, Alegría Café sits at 5a Calle Poniente 2 and brews V60 pour-overs from Guatemalan farms, and Raíz Café, a small espresso-only bar at 6a Calle Poniente 26, uses beans from nearby farms and from Huehuetenango.43

Café Bohème, on 5a Calle Poniente, serves coffee and Guatemalan hot chocolate and has a rooftop that looks toward Fuego.1 Rooftop Antigua, on 6a Avenida Norte, opens daily 08:00–19:00. Ojala Cafe, at 3a Calle Poniente 20, serves small-batch coffee from women-owned Guatemalan microfarms, with most of its tables in a garden.3

Holy Week, rain and opening hours

Lent and Holy Week bring the year's biggest crowds. Each Sunday in Lent a parish sends a procession through the center over carpets of dyed sawdust, flowers and pine needles, and processions here are recorded as far back as 1543.21 Rooms fill early that week and prices rise.1

Most cafés around the square open between 07:00 and 08:00. Café Bohème starts at 07:30 and stays open until 20:30 on Fridays and Saturdays, among the latest here. Sat Nam, a vegan café on 4a Calle Oriente, keeps the opposite hours, opening at 12:30 on weekdays and closing at 20:00. From June to September, the wettest months, keep a roofed table in mind.2
