Which specialty bars welcome laptops

Not every café with good coffee wants a laptop on the table. 12 Onzas on 4a Calle Oriente keeps a quieter workspace at the back, beyond its open-air courtyard, and La Vid Coffee Roasters is known for solid Wi-Fi.2 The small rooms at Raíz Café and Alegría Café are better for a short stop, and so is Ojala Cafe, where most tables are in the garden.2

Starbucks has a branch in a colonial building near the arch, with a courtyard, which the Along Dusty Roads guide rates as workable for a couple of hours.2

Book cafés and courtyards north of the square

A Ver Quien Soy, at 2a Calle Poniente 25, works as a cultural space as much as a café, with music, books, vinyl and local art.3 It is open 07:00–19:00 most days and until 21:00 on Saturdays. Siena Luz Coffee & Book Shop opens at 07:00 (08:00 on Saturdays) and closes at 18:00, or 19:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Café Estudio, at 4a Avenida Norte 2A, adds outdoor tables.

At Fernando's Kaffee, 7a Avenida Norte 43D, the courtyard lies past the first two rooms and the kitchen, and the owner may show you the roaster and grinder.4

Rooftops and afternoon hours

Around the square, Café Bohème on 5a Calle Poniente has a rooftop facing Fuego and stays open until 20:00 most nights.4 Rooftop Antigua on 6a Avenida Norte opens daily 08:00–19:00. Sat Nam, a vegan café on 4a Calle Oriente, suits an afternoon session: it opens at 12:30 on weekdays and closes at 20:00, or at 15:30 on Saturdays.

Y Tu Piña También, at 1a Avenida Sur 10B, offers free Wi-Fi and serves proper espresso.4 Near the square, Macinare Caffe at 4a Calle Poniente 11 and La Rosona at 6a Avenida Sur 8 have Wi-Fi as well.

Bills, rain and the walk home

At sit-down cafés the bill may carry a 10% propina sugerida. It is voluntary, and you can choose another amount, such as 5%.5 From June to September, the wettest months, choose a table under a roof before you open the laptop.1

If you work into the evening, note that tuk-tuks stop around 22:00 and that after about 23:00 a taxi is the safer way back to your room.4
