Kowloon City is often called Hong Kong's Little Thailand for its Thai restaurants and shops; in 2016 about a third of the city's Thai residents lived here.1 For decades it sat under the approach to Kai Tak airport, where pilots crossed Victoria Harbour and Kowloon City at low altitude before a sharp right turn to the runway, and strict height limits kept buildings low.21
Kai Tak closed on 6 July 1998.2 A cruise terminal opened on the tip of the old runway in June 2013, and Kai Tak Sports Park, with its 50,000-seat stadium, opened on 1 March 2025.23 Coffee follows both halves: old shophouse streets around Nga Tsin Wai Road and Nam Kok Road, and a cluster of cafés in Kai Tak Mall on Shing Kai Road.
Local tip: Make Kowloon City a breakfast stop: 樂園's milk tea on the third floor of the municipal services building started at 07:15 on weekdays in 2023, and Tai Wo Tang on Nga Tsin Long Road opens at 08:00.
