Causeway Bay has been Hong Kong Island's main shopping district since the 1970s; the Japanese department store Daimaru opened on Great George Street in 1960, and the area's retail rents ranked as the world's highest for about a decade after overtaking Fifth Avenue in 2012.1 The Tin Hau Temple and the typhoon shelter are reminders that it began as a fishing settlement.1

Tai Hang, southeast of the shopping streets, was a Hakka village of farmers and fishermen in 1880 and is now a dining neighborhood.2 Coffee here leans to dessert and late afternoons: milk pudding on Lockhart Road, dessert cafés on Haven Street and a tea stall in Tai Hang that has poured milk tea since the 1950s.3

Local tip: For milk tea before the malls open, walk to Bing Kee on Shepherd Street in Tai Hang, which opened at 07:00 in 2023; Cafe Corridor on Russell Street is the area's other early start, at 08:00 on weekdays.
