精品咖啡 (specialty coffee) grew out of a very different cup. Coffee took hold in Hong Kong's cha chaan tengs in the 1950s, usually dark-roasted instant coffee with condensed or evaporated milk, and only in the past 20 years or so have hundreds of specialty shops opened.1 By 2026 the independents were also competing with fast-growing mainland chains such as Luckin and Cotti, known for low prices.1
Competition baristas helped build the scene. Kapo Chiu of The Cupping Room won the Hong Kong Barista Championship (HKBC) in two consecutive seasons, defending his title in September 2013, and in 2014 placed second at the World Barista Championship in Rimini, Italy.23

Hong Kong's barista competitions
The HKBC had its first woman champion in 2023, when Penny Pang won; she went on to represent Hong Kong at the 2024 world final in Busan.4 The local calendar now covers brewing and coffee cocktails too: Bavis Kwong won the 2025 Hong Kong Coffee Brewing Championship and Ricky Chan the 2025 Hong Kong Coffee in Good Spirits Championship.4
Results keep coming from abroad as well. In June 2026, Hong Kong's Hasting Ng won the global final of the DaVinci Gourmet Barista Craft Championship, held at World of Coffee Bangkok.5 At home, the tenth PMQ Coffee Agenda, held over three days from 31 October 2025, ran nearly 40 coffee events with more than 40 exhibitors, and the brewing championship was free to watch.4
Specialty bars from Mody Road to Reclamation Street
Causeway Bay has the most specialty cafés, with Mong Kok and Kwun Tong close behind. REACTION Coffee Roasters, at 32–48 Mody Road in Tsim Sha Tsui East, is open 08:00–22:00 every day and has outdoor seats. Common Man Coffee Roasters is at 18 Hanoi Road, and InFuse Specialty Coffee is in K11 ATELIER Victoria Dockside at 18 Salisbury Road.
Farther north, Islet Coffee Lab is at 102–104 Reclamation Street in Yau Ma Tei, and My Little Coffee Roastery is at 120 Tai Nan Street, near the Sham Shui Po end of Mong Kok.
Espresso bars on the Island
In Central, OneThird Coffee Roasters is on Graham Street and N.O.T. Specialty Coffee at 41 Connaught Road Central. In Sheung Wan, Barista Jam on Jervois Street, which Sprudge counts among the earliest catalysts of the city's third-wave coffee, roasts its own beans.1
In Wan Chai, 笑林寺 Cloud nine specialty coffee, at 33 Morrison Hill Road, keeps 08:00–18:00 weekday hours. Farther east, Alchemy Espresso, at 4–6 Hoi Wan Street in Quarry Bay, also serves brunch.
What coffee costs, from chains to specialty bars
The mainland chains' list prices are higher than their reputation suggests. In June 2025 Luckin, which had opened 12 Hong Kong outlets in half a year, listed its Americano and latte at HK$39 each, matching Starbucks and 26 to 59 percent above its mainland prices; first-time app users got a HK$15.90 offer.6 At independent specialty bars, Zolima CityMag put a typical cup at HK$30–60 in April 2025.7
Most specialty bars keep daytime hours, so plan a coffee crawl for the morning: Cloud nine opens at 08:00 on weekdays and closes at 18:00, while REACTION stays open until 22:00.
