Mong Kok's Chinese name, 旺角, is read as "prosperous corner" or "crowded corner", and both fit: at about 130,000 people per square kilometer, Guinness World Records has called it the busiest district in the world.1 Yau Ma Tei, to the south, was a bay where Tanka fishing families gathered before Kowloon was ceded to Britain in 1860, and Shanghai Street was its main road before Nathan Road replaced it.2

Coffee here keeps late hours. The bing sutts and cha chaan tengs on Mong Kok's shopping streets serve into the evening, dessert cafés stay open past 22:00, and a few specialty bars sit on quieter streets near Reclamation Street and Tai Nan Street. Yau Ma Tei adds a café beside an art-house cinema.3

Local tip: Start early at Kam Wah Café on Bute Street, which opened at 06:30 in 2023, then walk to the Goldfish Market on Tung Choi Street just north of it and south to the Ladies' Market, which opens at noon; Christy's Café on Sai Yeung Choi Street South serves until 23:00 for the way back.
