Free public Wi-Fi in Hong Kong runs under one name. The government launched the common brand Wi-Fi.HK on 5 August 2014 with more than 5,000 hotspots at the airport, tourist sites, public phone booths, malls, cafés, eateries and convenience stores; access is either free or free for at least 30 minutes, with no sign-up.1 It has since grown to around 43,000 hotspots across all 18 districts, searchable on wi-fi.hk or in the iAM Smart app.2
Inside independent cafés, a network is less certain. In a 2017 HK01 column, a writer who works from cafés found many with tables and power sockets but no Wi-Fi; at Kubrick in Yau Ma Tei the writer moved to the McDonald's next door, and the writer's speed tests at cafés charging HK$50–60 a cup came out far slower than at a Café de Coral.3 Tsim Sha Tsui has the most cafés with Wi-Fi, followed by Sheung Wan.
Local tip: Most Wi-Fi cafés here close by 19:00. For an evening session, Coffee Alley on Hankow Road or Pennington Street runs until 23:00, and SP_CE on Po Hing Fong until 22:00.
Where these cafés are: Tsim Sha Tsui & Jordan (7), Sheung Wan (4), Causeway Bay, Tai Hang & Tin Hau (3), Kennedy Town & Sai Ying Pun (3), Sham Shui Po (1), Wan Chai (1), North Point & Quarry Bay (1).

In Causeway Bay, Coffee Alley's Pennington Street branch keeps the same noon-to-23:00 day as the Tsim Sha Tsui shop, and Cotton Lane Cafe at 14 Min Fat Street pairs Wi-Fi with outdoor tables, Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–18:30.
East along the Island line, Alchemy Espresso is at 4–6 Hoi Wan Street in Quarry Bay. In Sham Shui Po, Contrast at 512 Fuk Wing Street opens at 09:00 every day and stays until 19:00 on Sundays.
Laptops, weekends and public hotspots
Not every café wants laptops at peak times. Venner, a Nordic-style café in Sheung Wan, keeps weekends laptop-free and drew one-star Google reviews for it in 2025; laptops are still welcome on weekdays, when it is quieter.4 For a weekday work session, Cafe REVOL, Nón Cafe and Cloud nine all open at 08:00.
Public hotspots fill the gaps. By January 2020 more than 1,200 government venues had Wi-Fi.HK, among them all public libraries, most museums, and public markets and cooked food centres; average speeds had risen past 20 Mbps after fibre upgrades.5 That can put free Wi-Fi within reach of the milk tea stalls in cooked food centres, such as the one upstairs in the Sheung Wan Municipal Services Building on Queen's Road Central.
