Fushimi Inari-taisha, traditionally founded in 711, is the head shrine of the kami Inari, with as many as 32,000 sub-shrines across Japan. About 10,000 torii line the trails up Mount Inari (233 m), some 800 of them on the Senbon Torii, and the paths cover about 4 km, roughly two hours on foot.1 The shrine never closes: the approach and main hall are lit all night, and entry is free.1

Fushimi's other trade is sake. Gekkeikan was founded here in 1637, and its Okura Sake Museum at 247 Minamihama-chō occupies a brewery building of 1909.2 Several of the ward's cafés sit on the approach to the shrine itself.

Local tip: Walk the torii first thing, since the shrine never closes, and come down for About Us Coffee's espresso course when it opens at 08:00.

Getting to Fushimi Inari and the brewing quarter

Inari Station on the JR Nara Line is about five minutes by train from Kyoto Station, and Keihan's Fushimi-Inari Station is a short walk away.1 Farther south, Chūshojima, opened in 1910, is the junction of Keihan's Main and Uji lines.3

Coffee on the shrine approach

About Us Coffee, at 22-15 Fukakusa Inari Toriimae-chō, opened in 2019; its owner, Yasunari Sawanoi, left the fashion trade to start it, and his Ethiopian coffee took first place at Tokyo's Coffee Collection in 2022. Its Espresso Experience Course splits a double shot between a straight espresso and a latte, with a card on the beans.4 It opens daily 08:00–17:00, with outdoor seats and Wi-Fi.

Vermillion calls its Fushimi Inari café its main shop and runs others around Kyoto Station.5 Berry's Kitchen Studio opens 11:00–18:00 every day, and Roku, a kissa (coffee house), is near Inari Station. Cafe Uzura is farther south in Fukakusa.

The sake streets

Fushimi's mineral-rich water is credited with the smooth, balanced character of its sake, and many breweries offer tastings. Gekkeikan's museum keeps the old brewing wells. Terada-ya, the inn where Sakamoto Ryōma was nearly killed in 1866, is nearby, though the present building is said to be a reconstruction.6

Jikkokubune boats run on the canals in spring and autumn and stop in winter, and Benten Bridge over the Hori River looks onto the canals that made Fushimi a river port on the Uji River. Abura-chō, a liquor shop, stocks more than 80 sakes and pours tastings of up to three; Japan's legal drinking age is 20.6

Okobu Kitase, a café and bar opened in 2017 by a kelp merchant, serves obanzai (Kyoto home-style dishes) made with kelp stock alongside local sake.6 In the brewing streets, Shimao Coffee opens 11:00–17:00 except Tuesday, and Fukura Suzume (珈琲と和傘, coffee and wagasa, Japanese umbrellas), in the Fushimi Nagaya row on Higashi-Hishiya-chō, opens only 10:00–14:00, Sunday to Wednesday.

Hours and the rest of the ward

Most cafés in Fushimi close by 18:00, so plan the climb for the morning and coffee straight after. The ward is large: the dog café ninnananna, open 11:30–17:30 daily, is in the east, and Cecil and the bakery café リゲル (Rigel) are in Hazukashi, in the far west.
