Kyoto Station's present building opened in 1997 for the city's 1,200th anniversary: a glass-and-steel block by Hiroshi Hara, about 70 m tall and 470 m from east to west. It serves the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, JR West's local lines, Kintetsu and the Karasuma subway line.1 North of the station, Higashi Hongan-ji, founded by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1602, stands just above the Karasuma-Shichijō crossing; its Goei-dō hall is one of the largest wooden buildings in the world.2

The area's cafés stretch from the Hachijō side south of the tracks up to Gojō and east to Kawaramachi. A few sit inside the station and its hotels, some roast their own beans, and an Uji tea house serves matcha a few minutes north of the platforms.

Local tip: For coffee before an early Shinkansen, Omofu opens at 07:00 on the Hachijō side, and Inoda's branch inside the station follows at 08:00 every day of the year.

Kaikado Café and its Shichijō neighbors

Kaikado has made tea caddies in Kyoto since 1875.3 Its café occupies the old Uchihama overhead-wire office of the Kyoto City tram, built in 1927 to repair the streetcar lines and used as a garage; the city chose Kaikado's plan as the first under a scheme inviting proposals for unused city property, and the café opened in May 2016.6

The building was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property in 2017. Kaikado Roastery now roasts in-house, on a recipe carried over from Nakagawa Wani Coffee, and a coffee cost ¥1,100 in September 2025.3 The café opens at 08:00, closing at 16:00 on weekdays and 17:00 at weekends, on Kawaramachi-dōri north of Shichijō.7 West of it, Walden Woods is on Hanaya-chō-dōri, and Shio Veg Cafe opens 09:00–18:00 with vegetarian dishes.
