Maruyama is the western end of central Sapporo, about 10 minutes from Odori on the Tōzai subway line, where the grid meets the green of Hokkaido Jingū and Maruyama Park.1 The shrine was built on its present site in 1871 as Sapporo Shrine,2 and the park began early in the Meiji era as a tree-testing ground of the Hokkaido Development Commission before it was landscaped as a park around the turn of the Taishō era.1
This was farmland once. Its shopping street, Ura-sandō (裏参道, the back approach to the shrine), began as the Maruyama morning market, and in the residential blocks behind it and its condominium towers, old houses and buildings have been turned into cafés, sweet shops and small boutiques.1 Addresses here run from about Nishi 20- to Nishi 28-chōme, counted west from the Sōsei River.3
Local tip: Arrive at Morihico a little before it opens, at 11:00 on weekdays, since a line often forms;6 if it is long, Kikuchi Coffee on Kita 1-jō Nishi 20-chōme has been open since 07:00 on every day but Sunday.

Two Tōzai Line stations serve the area. Maruyama-kōen is the one for the shrine and park,1 and Miyakoshiya Coffee's head store at Minami 2-jō Nishi 28-chōme is about five minutes on foot from it.4 Nishi 18-chōme, one stop east, is closer to the eastern blocks: Kikuchi Coffee's main shop is a five- to six-minute walk from there and has eight parking spaces.5
Hokkaido Jingū's grounds hold about 1,400 cherry trees and some 250 plum trees, which bloom at almost the same time in spring; the ginkgo and maples turn in autumn.1 Maruyama Park, next to the shrine, also contains Maruyama Zoo,2 and Ezo squirrels (エゾリス, Hokkaido's red squirrel) live in its old-growth woods.1
Snow is the long season. Sapporo averages 4.79 m of it a year,2 which turns the short walk from Maruyama-kōen Station to a side-street café into a slow one.
Morihico (森彦), at Minami 2-jō Nishi 26-chōme 2-18, opened in June 1996 in an old wooden house down a narrow alley; its founder, Ichikawa Sōsuke, renovated it with his father and siblings. It roasts its own beans dark, and a line often forms before it opens.6 Its house blend, Mori no shizuku (森の雫), sold only at this shop, cost ¥913 in 2024.4 It opens 11:00–21:30 on weekdays and from 10:00 at weekends.
Kikuchi Coffee (菊地珈琲), at Kita 1-jō Nishi 20-chōme 3-33, dates from 1986, when Kikuchi Yoshimi left a large coffee wholesaler at 45 to open a family shop; his son Hiroki now does all the roasting.7 Since opening it has double-roasted its beans, roasting, cooling and roasting them again for a milder cup.75 A blend cost ¥360 after a June 2022 price rise.5
Maruyama starts early. 珈琲の店あかねや (Akaneya) at Kita 3-jō Nishi 20-chōme opens at 07:00 daily and closes at 17:00, and Kikuchi Coffee opens at 07:00 Monday to Saturday and closes at 19:00. 徳光珈琲 (Tokumitsu Coffee) on Odori Nishi 25-chōme keeps 10:00–20:00 every day, and パパヒデヒコ (Papa Hidehiko) at Kita 7-jō Nishi 20-chōme, with outdoor seats, opens 11:00–20:00 and closes on Mondays.
Evenings run later than in most of the city. 円山茶寮 (Maruyama Saryō) at Kita 4-jō Nishi 27-chōme stays open until 00:00 and closes on Thursdays, and CAFE びいだま, on the same block as Morihico, serves 11:00–23:00 daily. For vegan food, 青いそら 流れる雲 is on Minami 1-jō Nishi 22-chōme and 円山 Holistic Bio Cafe Veggy Way opens Thursday to Sunday, 11:30–18:00.
