Odori Park cuts west through the middle of Sapporo from Nishi 1-chōme, where the TV Tower stands, to Nishi 12-chōme. It began in 1871 as a firebreak and now holds about 4,700 trees of some 90 species.1 It is also the main site of the Sapporo Snow Festival, first held in 1950 and staged every February.2

Two rows south, Tanukikoji (狸小路) is one of Hokkaido's oldest shopping streets: about 900 m of shops from 1-chōme to 7-chōme, all under a covered arcade.3 Its eastern blocks keep the feel of an old shopping street, the middle ones lean on souvenirs and drugstores, and 8-chōme, where the arcade ends, has cafés and restaurants that draw a younger crowd.3

Local tip: In snow or rain, walk from Sapporo Station through Chi-ka-ho and on through Pole Town: the route stays underground for 1.9 km, all the way to Susukino.6

Getting around above and below ground

Chi-ka-ho (チ・カ・ホ), the walkway under Ekimae-dōri, runs 520 m from Sapporo Station to Odori. It opened on 12 March 2011, is 20 m wide, connects directly with 12 buildings and carries about 58,000 people a day.4

Below Odori, Pole Town (ポールタウン) continues 400 m south to Susukino Station, and Aurora Town (オーロラタウン) 310 m east toward the TV Tower. Both opened on 16 November 1971, a month before the Namboku Line, as Sapporo built its subway for the 1972 Winter Olympics.5 Together the passages form a 1.9 km underground route from the station to Susukino.6

Coffee by the TV Tower

Most of the area's cafés sit at the tower end. Marumi Coffee (丸美珈琲店), a specialty shop that opened in 2006, has its main store at Minami 1-jō Nishi 1-chōme 2, open daily 09:00–19:00; it is known for rice-flour waffles, five regular kinds plus one that changes each month.7 Its staff include certified coffee meisters who will suggest a bean if you tell them what you like.7 The company also runs a stand inside the park at Odori Nishi 8-chōme, open 08:00–19:00.

On the same block, ミンガスコーヒー (Mingus Coffee) is on a seventh floor and serves 09:00–00:00 every day, and ワールドブックカフェ (World Book Café) is on a fifth floor, with Wi-Fi. A block south, 三番街 珈琲店 at Minami 2-jō Nishi 2-chōme opens only 12:30–16:00, and さえら, on Odori Nishi 2-chōme, keeps 10:00–18:00 and closes on Wednesdays.

Late hours toward Tanukikoji

LAMP LIGHT BOOKS CAFE, on the ground floor of a book-themed hotel, is open 24 hours. When it opened in 2021 its shelves held about 4,000 mystery and travel books and novels by Hokkaido authors, food and drink were served 07:00–22:00, and anyone could sit and read, guest or not.8

CAFE NOYMOND at Minami 3-jō Nishi 2-chōme opens at 13:00 and closes at 23:00 daily, and REGALO KURA is an evening room, open 17:00–00:00 Monday to Saturday. At Minami 1-jō Nishi 6-chōme, オニヤンマ コーヒー&ビア (Oniyanma Coffee & Beer) is smoke-free, has Wi-Fi and serves vegan food. Love Espresso, an espresso bar, opens 08:00–20:00.

Seasons in the park

The park changes with the calendar. Corn wagons (とうきびワゴン) sell grilled corn there from late April to early October, and the rose garden in the Nishi 12-chōme zone grows about 55 varieties.1 In February the Snow Festival takes over the park,2 and on those days the underground route from Sapporo Station is the easiest way in: Chi-ka-ho comes up at Odori without a step outdoors.4
