West of Nishi 10-chōme the park thins out and the city quiets down. The city's Sapporo Burari Techo handbook describes this strip as the old edge of Sapporo's development, shown on early maps as a boundary between villages, and now known for its streetcars and nostalgic multi-tenant buildings with shops and cafés in the rooms.1

Its landmark is the former Sapporo Court of Appeals, built in 1926 at the western end of Odori Park from Sapporo soft stone and brick, designated a national Important Cultural Property in 2020 and now the Sapporo City Archives (札幌市資料館).2 The stone, Sapporo nanseki (札幌軟石), is a welded tuff.1

Local tip: Start at ATELIER Morihiko, which opened at 08:00 as of March 2024, for the morning-only fruit sandwiches, then walk to the City Archives at the end of Odori Park, about five minutes from Nishi 11-chōme Station.12

Getting to Odori West

The Tōzai subway line has two stations here, Nishi 11-chōme and Nishi 18-chōme,1 and the City Archives is about five minutes on foot from Nishi 11-chōme.2 The streetcar is the slower, more scenic way in. Since a 400 m link closed its loop in December 2015, it runs in a circle through the center, and the ride from Nakajima-kōen-dōri to Nishi 15-chōme became five minutes shorter.3

Coffee jelly, fruit sandwiches and curry

The same handbook's food writer sends sweet-lovers here: to Bandō Coffee (板東珈琲) at Odori Nishi 11-chōme 4-190 for a parfait filled with coffee jelly, and to ATELIER Morihiko (アトリエ・モリヒコ) for fruit sandwiches served only in the morning.1 The atelier, a Morihico shop at Minami 1-jō Nishi 12-chōme 4-182, opened at 08:00 and closed at 22:00 as of March 2024.1

THE END CAFE, at Minami 1-jō Nishi 16-chōme, is known for pairing curry with French toast.1 At Kita 1-jō Nishi 17-chōme, Kaeruya Coffee (カエルヤ珈琲店) combines its owner's fondness for frogs with modern art and opens Wednesday to Sunday.1 Kissa Tsubara Tsubara (喫茶つばらつばら) at Minami 1-jō Nishi 13-chōme, billed as a coffee shop for thinking, serves a pudding à la mode.1

North of the park: early and late

The blocks north of Odori keep office hours. 珈琲倶楽部 (Coffee Club) at Kita 4-jō Nishi 16-chōme opens at 08:00 on weekdays only and closes at 18:00; it has Wi-Fi and is smoke-free. POP/iN opens at 08:00 every day and stays open until 22:00 Monday to Saturday.

The late shift belongs to Café 倫敦館 at Kita 4-jō Nishi 11-chōme, open daily 09:00–23:30 and smoke-free, and IN ROCK CAFE, open 12:00–00:00 every day. On Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, Treize 13 splits its day into lunch, 11:00–15:00, and dinner, 17:00–22:00; it closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Gardens and quiet rooms

The Hokkaido Governor's Official Residence at Kita 1-jō Nishi 16-chōme was built by the Mitsui zaibatsu in 1936 as the Mitsui Club and became the governor's residence in 1953. Its garden, where people read on the lawn, keeps hours of 09:00–17:00, and the grounds also hold the Hokkaido Migishi Kōtarō Museum of Art.1 Back on Odori, the sunken rose garden at Nishi 12-chōme grows more than 50 kinds of roses.1
