The Binnenstad is the medieval core inside the singels, and the Oudegracht cuts through it from north to south for about 2 km.1 Its southern section, between the Bijlhouwerbrug and the Gaardbrug, was dug in 1122, the year Utrecht received city rights, and sixteen bridges now cross the canal.1

For coffee this is the densest district by far. Cafés crowd the short streets between the canal and the Domplein, from the Donkere Gaard to the Vismarkt and the Ganzenmarkt, and several start early: Tijm, Daen's Café on the Korte Minrebroederstraat and Keek on the Springweg all open at 08:00.

Local tip: Tijm on the Donkere Gaard opens at 08:00 every day and serves until 23:00, and De Vingerhoed, two doors down, keeps going until 01:30 except on Sundays. Kluts, behind the Dom, opens at 10:00.

The wharves and their cellars

From the second half of the 12th century, merchants cut tunnels from the quays to cellars under the canal-side houses, and by the 15th century the Oudegracht had become a harbor about 2 km long with double quays.1 DUIC put the number of werfkelders (wharf cellars) at about 800 in 2021.2 Wooden fences closed them off on the water side until the 18th century, when stone walls replaced them.1

The city took over the werven (wharves) and their walls in 1948. From the 1960s several cellars became nightclubs, and many now hold cafés and restaurants, mostly with a terrace along the water; some deliveries still arrive by beer boat.1 The quay walls are under repair: large-scale work began in 2013, and the 30-year plan presented in 2021 was roughly estimated at €450–550 million.2

Domplein and the Dom tower

The Domtoren rises 112.32 m and was built from 1321 to 1382. A storm on 1 August 1674 brought down the nave of the cathedral and left the tower standing apart from the church; its latest restoration ran from 2018 to 10 November 2024.3

The square between tower and church has been called the Domplein since 1912. Its paving traces the ground plan of the lost nave and of two older churches, and DOMunder has opened the excavations below to visitors since 2015.4 On the square, Badabing is at number 20 and Lebowski at 17, and Kluts, a bakery-café at Achter de Dom 6, opens daily 10:00–17:00.

Donkere Gaard, the Wed and the Vismarkt

The Donkere Gaard and the Lichte Gaard together run about 80 m to the Wed, named for the slope where goods were loaded at the water. The gaard was the bishop's orchard, and donker (dark) refers to houses built out over the wharf that blocked the light.5 Tijm is at number 3, open daily 08:00–23:00, De Vingerhoed at 11 stays open until 01:30 from Monday to Saturday, and Heen en Weer is at 13.

The Vismarkt runs about 100 m along the east bank, from the Stadhuisbrug to the Maartensbrug, and is counted as Utrecht's oldest market: fish was sold here around 1200 and kept fresh in baskets hung in the canal.6 The last fish shop, De Voest, closed in 1970, and the street now has café terraces.6 Toetje is at number 14.

Ganzenmarkt, Neude and the north

Keen, a wholesale roaster and one of the first Dutch brands to own a Loring roaster, opened its first flagship café in an old building on the Ganzenmarkt. Its U-shaped bar holds filter gear at one end and a La Marzocco Leva at the other, and it opens daily 09:00–18:00.7

On the Neude, the main post office opened in August 1924, and the city library moved into it in May 2020; Meneer Potter is the café in its central hall.8 Its door is at Potterstraat 3, and it stays open until 23:00 from Thursday to Saturday. Further north, The Village Coffee & Music is at Voorstraat 46, and Bakkerswinkel Utrecht serves daily 09:00–17:00 at Wittevrouwenstraat 2.
