The Nachtegaalstraat

In the 17th century a country lane ran here from the Wittevrouwenpoort to the Maliebaan, with an inn called de Nachtegaaltjens.2 The narrow Nachtegaalsteegje took the name Nachtegaalstraat in 1869.1 From 1889 a horse tram from the Rhijnspoor station, now Utrecht Centraal, to the Maliebaan station ran along it, and between 1905 and 1913 the city demolished almost the whole north side and widened the street by about 10 m.2

Park Tivoli, behind the street, opened in 1828 for garden concerts and held Utrecht's first film screening in 1896; it was sold in 1929.2 Coffee on the Nachtegaalstraat now starts at 08:00 on weekdays at Vascobelo V-Bar. Momenti opens at 08:30 from Tuesday to Friday, and Fiore at 10:00 from Wednesday to Saturday.

Maliebaan and the Wilhelminapark

The Maliebaan is named after the maliespel, a game played with mallet and ball that Utrecht students were allowed to play here from 1637. The original lane was about 750 m long, and the game died out completely in 1796.3 The inn that served as the maliehuis sold chocolate and stronger drinks.3

East of it, the Wilhelminapark opened in 1898 on land the city bought from 1887, laid out in the English landscape style to a plan by Hendrik Copijn and Jan Anthony Loran.4 Its thatched Theehuis, a national monument, dates from 1925.4

Rietveld Schröderhuis and the Spoorwegmuseum

Gerrit Rietveld designed the Rietveld Schröderhuis, at Prins Hendriklaan 50, with Truus Schröder-Schräder, and it was built in 1923–1924. It joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 and can only be seen on a booked tour.5 Ukiyo Koffie runs a coffee bar in the house's former garage, open Thursday, Friday and Sunday 11:00–16:00, and it needs no museum ticket.6

The Spoorwegmuseum, the railway museum, has used the Maliebaanstation, a station building from 1874, since 5 November 1954.7 De Remise, its restaurant in the middle of the museum hall, serves espresso, latte macchiato and fresh mint tea, and opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–17:00.8

Burgemeester Reigerstraat and the Wagenstraat

At its east end the Nachtegaalstraat meets the Maliebaan and the Burgemeester Reigerstraat at a crossing where a traffic officer still worked the signals in 1968.1 Cupp is at Burgemeester Reigerstraat 63, open from 08:00 every day, and SAB is at number 13.

Café Elize bij 't Spoor, at Wagenstraat 50, opens at 08:00 and stays open until 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, the latest in Oost. Cornelis, at Maliestraat 16, serves from 08:00 to 16:00 on weekdays, and NOON bar, further south, opens at 09:30 from Tuesday to Friday.
