Arequipa sits at 2,328 m below El Misti, a 5,822 m volcano 12 km from the city.12 The old center is built of sillar, a white and sometimes pinkish volcanic stone, and Arequipa is known as the White City; UNESCO inscribed 332 ha of that center as a World Heritage Site in 2000.1 The air is dry, with about 3,333 hours of sunshine a year and an annual mean of about 14.5 °C, and most of the 75–100 mm of annual rain falls between December and March.1

Café Valenzuela has roasted in Arequipa for more than 70 years; it began at the Portal de Flores on the Plaza de Armas, and its specialty blend comes from Villa Rica and Chanchamayo, grown above 1,800 m.3 Kafi Wasi, run by Diego Cisneros and Pamela Raymer, selects and roasts its own coffee.4 In 2025 it ranked second in South America's 100 Best Coffee Shops, with OSO Café 28th,5 and in 2026 it was 17th on the world list.4

Food sets the rest of the table. Arequipa joined UNESCO's Creative Cities Network for gastronomy in 2019, and its picanterías, the traditional eateries, were declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation in 2014.1 Chocolate has a long history here too: La Ibérica was founded in Arequipa in 1909, and its first product was drinking chocolate.6

How to order coffee in Arequipa

Café menus follow the espresso bar, and a regular cappuccino averaged S/ 8.60 in Numbeo's figures for the year to October 2026, within a range of S/ 7–13.7 Specialty bars also brew by hand. On the municipality's first Coffee Tour, in June 2023, Kafi Wasi demonstrated the Chemex and the Japanese siphon, and OSO Café's baristas said they bought beans from six farming families in Cajamarca, Puno and Junín.8

Breakfast can be savory. Adobo is pork marinated in garlic, ají panca or rocoto, and vinegar or chicha de guiñapo (a fermented drink of local corn), then cooked in a clay pot; it is usually eaten in the morning with camote (sweet potato) and pan de tres puntas, a three-cornered bread, for the sauce.9 At the August 2024 Festival del Adobo Caymeño in Cayma, a plate cost from S/ 15.10

The drink beside the adobo is often té piteado, tea with a splash of pisco.9 Chicha de guiñapo is fermented for several days from guiñapo, a corn variety of the area; it has about 2–3% alcohol and a slightly sweet taste, and chicherías hang a red flag at the door when they have it.9

Queso helado (literally "frozen cheese") contains no cheese: it is a frozen milk dessert whose slabs look like fresh white cheese.9 Since 2012 the provincial municipality has marked the Día del Queso Helado on the fourth Sunday of January in the Plaza de Armas.9 Bread is cheap: in March 2026 three or four rolls cost S/ 1, depending on the type and where you buy them.11
